About this campground
Perched at 5,700 feet on Mt. Hood's rugged northeast slopes, the historic Tilly Jane Guard Station beckons winter adventurers with its promise of authentic backcountry solitude. This charming 1930s cabin, accessible only by ski or snowshoe through pristine winter wilderness, transforms into your personal base camp for exploring some of Oregon's most spectacular alpine terrain. Whether you're seeking heart-pumping descents, peaceful snowshoe meanders, or simply a cozy mountain refuge warmed by wood stove and mountain lore, Tilly Jane delivers an unforgettable high-altitude escape.
Tilly Jane Guard Station provides backcountry cabin accommodations ideal for winter recreation enthusiasts. The site is accessible by trail or road, though both routes can be challenging during winter conditions.
Historical SignificanceStep through the weathered door of Tilly Jane Guard Station and you're stepping back to 1934, when young men of the Civilian Conservation Corps hammered together this sturdy shelter with their own hands. As one of five treasured structures within the Cloud Cap/Tilly Jane Historic District, this cabin has watched over Mt. Hood's wild northeast flanks for nearly a century. Originally built to house fire lookouts and provide backcountry patrol access, these hand-hewn walls have sheltered countless mountain stories—from early ski pioneers to modern powder seekers.
Weather and SeasonsWinter transforms this high-altitude haven into a snow-laden wonderland where nature rules supreme. Fierce storms can sweep across the mountain without warning, blanketing the landscape in fresh powder while temperatures plummet well below freezing. The deep snowpack that makes access challenging also creates the perfect playground for winter enthusiasts. Visitors must come prepared for Mother Nature at her most dramatic—think howling winds, whiteout conditions, and the kind of bone-chilling cold that makes that crackling wood stove all the more welcoming.
ElevationAt 5,700 feet above sea level, Tilly Jane Guard Station sits in that sweet spot where accessible meets adventurous. This elevation delivers everything winter sports enthusiasts crave: reliable deep snowpack, challenging terrain that tests your skills, and that thin-air exhilaration that comes with playing in the high country. The altitude adds an extra dimension to every activity, turning simple tasks into adventures and rewarding those who make the journey with unparalleled alpine experiences.
Natural Features and SceneryFrom Tilly Jane's weathered porch, the Cascade Range unfolds in a breathtaking 360-degree panorama that includes volcanic giants Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens, and distant Mt. Rainier piercing the horizon. The surrounding landscape tells its own dramatic story, where the scars of the 2008 Gnarl Ridge Fire have created haunting silver snag forests that stand in stark contrast to the deep green of surviving timber. When winter storms clear, the views stretch endlessly across a sea of peaks and valleys, while closer to home, the deep snowpack transforms every ridge and gully into potential adventure terrain.
Geological RegionNestled high on Mt. Hood's northeast shoulder at 5,700 feet, Tilly Jane Guard Station occupies a dramatic slice of Cascade Range geography where volcanic forces meet alpine weathering. This backcountry perch, shaped by centuries of glacial carving and volcanic activity, receives some of the deepest snowfall in Oregon. The surrounding terrain showcases the raw beauty of high-altitude environments, where 1930s-era CCC craftsmanship stands resilient against the elements, offering modern adventurers a glimpse into both geological time and human history.
