This hidden gem in the Entiat Ranger District welcomes visitors with six intimate single-family sites available on a first-come, first-serve basis, plus a spacious group site ideal for family reunions or outdoor gatherings. The gentle murmur of the Mad River creates nature's soundtrack as you settle into this peaceful retreat.
Pine Flats Group Campground offers one group site and six single-family sites that are first-come, first-serve. No other camping accommodations like cabins or glamping options are provided.
Weather and SeasonsFrom April through October, Pine Flats basks in the warm embrace of Eastern Washington's signature dry climate, where crystal-clear skies dominate and temperatures create perfect conditions for outdoor adventures. Days unfold with glorious highs reaching 87°F, while evenings cool to a comfortable 60°F—ideal for gathering around the campfire. Summer brings its own wild character with intense sunshine that reminds visitors to seek shade during midday hours. As with any riverside paradise, mosquitoes join the evening chorus, and wise campers stay alert for the occasional rattlesnake sunning itself on warm rocks.
ElevationPerched at 1,621 feet above sea level, Pine Flats offers just enough elevation to escape the valley heat while maintaining easy access and comfortable conditions. This sweet spot altitude delivers crisp morning air and spectacular star-filled nights without the challenges of true high-altitude camping.
Natural Features and SceneryThe Mad River serves as the campground's centerpiece, its clear waters dancing over smooth stones while towering ponderosa pines cast dappled shadows across sun-drenched meadows. Spring transforms the landscape into a wildflower wonderland, painting the grasslands with splashes of color that attract photographers and nature lovers alike. This diverse ecosystem supports an impressive cast of wildlife—from majestic mule deer browsing at dawn to moose making occasional appearances near the river. Overhead, bald eagles patrol the waterway while woodpeckers tap out rhythms in the pine bark and owls herald the arrival of dusk with haunting calls.
Geological RegionPine Flats claims its place within the magnificent tapestry of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, specifically in the renowned Entiat Ranger District. Here, the Mad River has carved its course through ancient landscapes, creating a corridor where ponderosa pine forests meet expansive meadows. This unique convergence of ecosystems showcases the geological diversity that makes the Eastern Cascades such a compelling destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking both riverside relaxation and forest exploration.
