About this campground

Deep in the heart of Alaska's wilderness, Winstanley Lake Cabin awaits those seeking true solitude and adventure. Nestled 33 air miles northeast of Ketchikan, this remote sanctuary can only be reached by float plane skimming across pristine waters or by boat navigating challenging passages. Set within the breathtaking Misty Fiords National Monument Wilderness, the cabin offers an unparalleled gateway to untamed nature, where wildlife roams freely and the modern world feels centuries away.
Winstanley Lake Cabin provides a single, nonelectric log cabin for a remote camping experience. This is not a traditional campground with multiple campsites but rather a singular accommodation.
Historical SignificanceStep back in time at the historic Winstanley Lake Shelter, a testament to American ingenuity and determination. Built by the skilled hands of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s, this enduring structure stands as a monument to the young men who shaped America's wilderness legacy during the Great Depression, their craftsmanship still providing shelter to adventurers nearly a century later.
Weather and SeasonsSummer brings a gentle reprieve to this northern paradise, with temperatures hovering comfortably between 48°F and 55°F—perfect for outdoor exploration. Be prepared for the region's legendary rainfall, which nourishes the lush temperate rainforest surrounding the cabin. As autumn arrives, the lake begins its transformation, eventually freezing solid through winter and into early spring, creating a crystalline wonderland that limits access but rewards the hardy few who witness its frozen beauty.
ElevationTucked into the dramatic landscape of Southeast Alaska's coastal mountains, the cabin sits at a comfortable elevation that balances accessibility with stunning mountain and lake views.
Natural Features and SceneryImmerse yourself in an ancient forest cathedral where towering spruce, hemlock, and cedar trees have stood sentinel for centuries. The cabin overlooks the mirror-like waters of Winstanley Lake, perfectly reflecting the surrounding peaks and endless sky. This pristine ecosystem showcases nature's grandest architecture—from moss-draped giants to delicate forest flowers—while the lake's glassy surface serves as a window into an underwater world teeming with life.
Geological RegionExperience the raw majesty of Misty Fiords National Monument Wilderness, where geological forces have sculpted a landscape of stunning contrasts. Ancient forests of spruce, hemlock, and cedar blanket the mountainsides, their roots anchored in soil built over millennia. The serene waters of Winstanley Lake fill a basin carved by nature's patient hand, creating a perfect alpine jewel surrounded by peaks that pierce the frequent mists, giving this mystical region its evocative name.
