The Salmon Lake Campground is located on the shores of Salmon Lake, one of the northernmost spawning areas for Sockeye salmon in Alaska. The campground is approximately 40 miles north of Nome, Alaska, and is accessed by a one mile gravel road off the Nome-Kougarok Highway. A sign on the Highway directs visitors to the campground and lake. Facilities at the nine acre complex include an unimproved boat launch, six campsites with picnic tables, two trash receptacles, and a single door outhouse.
<p>From Nome, drive approximately 38 miles north on Nome-Kougarok Highway. Turn right towards Salmon Lake at milepost 38 to access the campground. </p>

Fall delivers the best experience here. Late August through September brings peak Sockeye runs, turning the lake into a wildlife spectacle as salmon spawn and predators gather. Daytime highs range from 35 to 50°F, with nights dropping to or below freezing by September. Clear skies are common, making for excellent stargazing. Winter is brutal: lows around -7°F, highs just above freezing, and light snow. The campground is accessible year-round, but most visitors come for the salmon runs and cooler fall temperatures.
