About this campground

Deep within Alaska's legendary Inside Passage, Hugh Smith Lake Cabin awaits those seeking true wilderness solitude. This remote sanctuary, accessible only by floatplane, sits nestled among towering old-growth forests at the edge of pristine Hugh Smith Lake in the Misty Fiords National Monument Wilderness. While the cabin provides essential shelter with its rustic amenities, adventurers must arrive fully prepared with all necessary supplies for their backcountry escape. Here, far from civilization's reach, you'll discover the raw beauty of untouched Alaska.
The campground exclusively offers cabin lodging in a remote wilderness setting.
Historical SignificanceAt the eastern shores of Hugh Smith Lake lies a fascinating remnant of Alaska's industrial past—an abandoned cannery that once buzzed with activity during the territory's fishing boom. Today, these weathered structures stand as silent witnesses to a bygone era, inviting curious visitors to explore and imagine the lives of those who once worked these remote waters. The site offers a compelling glimpse into the region's maritime heritage and the enduring relationship between Alaskans and the sea.
Weather and SeasonsWinter brings dramatic weather to Hugh Smith Lake, with temperatures hovering between 31°F and 37°F while heavy rains and occasional snow transform the landscape. The cabin truly shines during late spring and early summer, when clear skies and gentle breezes create perfect conditions for exploration. As seasons change, so does the lake itself—winter's icy grip eventually yields to summer's open waters, affecting floatplane access and shaping each visitor's unique experience in this remote corner of Alaska.
ElevationPositioned at the serene waters of Hugh Smith Lake, the cabin sits at lake level, offering intimate connections with both the aquatic environment and the surrounding temperate rainforest ecosystem.
Natural Features and SceneryThe cabin commands a spectacular position on a forested peninsula that juts into Hugh Smith Lake, surrounded by a cathedral of ancient Sitka spruce, western hemlock, and aromatic cedar trees. This pristine wilderness serves as home to Alaska's most iconic wildlife—mighty brown bears fish along the shoreline, black-tailed deer browse in forest clearings, wolves move like shadows through the underbrush, and majestic moose wade through shallow coves. The lake itself becomes a stage for nature's aerial ballet, with diverse waterfowl species gracing its surface throughout the seasons.
Geological RegionThe cabin sits within the breathtaking Misty Fiords National Monument Wilderness, a landscape sculpted by ancient glaciers and volcanic activity in Alaska's famed Inside Passage. This geological wonderland showcases dramatic fjords carved deep into the coastal mountains, while pristine old-growth forests of Sitka spruce, western hemlock, and cedar blanket the slopes that rise from Hugh Smith Lake. The surrounding terrain tells a story millions of years in the making, where tectonic forces and ice ages have created one of North America's most spectacular wilderness areas.
