About this campground

Nestled at 4,600 feet in the heart of the Cascades, Big Lake Campground invites adventurers to claim one of 49 generously-sized sites perfect for both RV travelers and tent enthusiasts. Wake up to mirror-like reflections of majestic Mt. Washington across Big Lake's pristine waters, where morning mist dances above the surface. This well-appointed mountain retreat provides all the essentials—clean vault toilets, fresh drinking water, and convenient boat launch access—while keeping you connected to the raw beauty of the high country.
Big Lake Campground offers a range of accommodations, including sites for tent camping and RV use. A mix of reservable and first-come, first-served sites are available.
Historical SignificanceYour mountain escape follows in the wagon tracks of Oregon pioneers, as Big Lake sits along the legendary Santiam Wagon Road where settlers once navigated these rugged passes. Today, the campground serves as a perfect basecamp for exploring the McKenzie Pass-Santiam Pass National Scenic Byway, a designated scenic route that weaves through some of Oregon's most spectacular volcanic landscapes and historic sites.
Weather and SeasonsSummer transforms Big Lake into a sun-drenched paradise where warm days invite endless outdoor adventures, though evening visitors should come prepared for the mosquitoes that thrive in this lakeside ecosystem. As wildfire season peaks, campfire restrictions often take effect to protect this precious landscape. Early June and late September bookend the season with dramatic weather shifts—expect refreshing rains and crisp mountain air that can surprise unprepared campers with genuine alpine chill.
ElevationPerched at 4,600 feet where the air grows thin and crisp, Big Lake Campground offers a true high-altitude experience. The elevation brings refreshingly cool nights even in summer's peak, though some visitors may need a day to adjust to the thinner mountain air. This lofty setting rewards campers with crystal-clear skies perfect for stargazing and temperatures that provide sweet relief from valley heat.
Natural Features and SceneryA tapestry of alpine fir, mountain hemlock, and lodgepole pine creates a stunning backdrop for your camping adventure, though recent wildfires have opened the canopy to reveal even more spectacular views of Mt. Washington's snow-capped summit. The landscape tells a story of nature's resilience, where new growth emerges among fire-scarred giants. While the volcanic soil can kick up dust on dry days and shade has become more precious, the panoramic vistas and direct access to Big Lake's sparkling waters more than compensate for Mother Nature's recent renovations.
Geological RegionDiscover camping at the crossroads of fire and ice at Santiam Pass, where ancient lava flows meet glacially-carved peaks in the heart of the Cascade Range. This dramatic landscape showcases nature's most powerful forces—from the surrounding volcanic peaks to hidden waterfalls cascading through old-growth forests of alpine fir, mountain hemlock, and lodgepole pine. Big Lake itself sits like a sapphire jewel in this rugged volcanic terrain, offering a front-row seat to the Cascades' ongoing geological drama where pristine alpine lakes reflect the region's tumultuous volcanic past.
