About this campground

Nestled beneath a canopy of towering second-growth ponderosa pines, Salters Cabin Horse Camp beckons to equestrian adventurers seeking a cool mountain retreat. This thoughtfully designed campground caters specifically to horse enthusiasts, featuring a spacious corral where your four-legged companions can rest comfortably after a day on the trails. While the historic Salters Cabin stands as a charming reminder of the area's past, it remains preserved for viewing only—your true sanctuary awaits among the whispering pines that provide blessed shade during those warm summer days.
Salters Cabin Horse Camp is a primitive campground catering primarily to horse campers. It offers basic camping accommodations without modern facilities.
Historical SignificanceStanding as a silent sentinel to bygone days, the historic Salters Cabin tells stories of the early settlers and forest workers who once called these woods home. Though preserved as a historical landmark and closed to public entry, the cabin adds an authentic touch of heritage to your camping experience, inviting contemplation of the generations who have passed through these ancient pine corridors.
Weather and SeasonsExperience the full spectrum of mountain weather at Salters Cabin, where each season paints the landscape with its own distinct palette. Winter transforms the camp into a crystalline wonderland, with temperatures dipping below freezing and occasional snowfall blanketing the forest floor. Summer brings relief from valley heat, offering pleasantly moderate temperatures and predominantly dry conditions perfect for trail riding. Spring and fall serve as nature's transition periods, greeting early risers with crisp, invigorating mornings that gradually warm into comfortable afternoons—ideal weather for both horses and riders.
Natural Features and SceneryThe campground emerges from a sea of majestic second-growth ponderosa pines, their cinnamon-colored bark and vanilla-scented presence creating an enchanting forest cathedral. Dappled sunlight filters through the needle-laden branches, creating ever-changing patterns on the forest floor while providing natural shelter from the elements.
Geological RegionSituated within the expansive Ochoco National Forest, Salters Cabin Horse Camp occupies a special corner of Oregon's geological tapestry. The surrounding second-growth ponderosa pine forest represents nature's resilience and renewal, offering a shaded sanctuary that provides welcome relief from summer's intensity. This regenerated woodland ecosystem showcases the Ochoco's characteristic dry forest environment, where volcanic soils nurture these stately conifers in their journey skyward.
