About this campground

Step back in time at Yellow Mule Cabin, where a century of wilderness stories await. This authentic 1920s ranger station invites adventurous souls to experience the backcountry as early forest rangers did. Within its weathered walls, you'll find the essentials for a genuine mountain retreat: sturdy cots for restful nights, a cast-iron wood stove to chase away the chill, and the warm glow of a propane lantern. True to its rustic heritage, the cabin maintains its off-grid character—you'll need to bring your own water and firewood, making this an ideal escape for those seeking an authentic wilderness experience.
Yellow Mule Cabin offers a unique backcountry lodging experience. It is not accessible by car, emphasizing a primitive and remote setting.
Historical SignificanceYellow Mule Cabin stands as a testament to the ingenuity of early Forest Service pioneers. Crafted in 1920 by a builder who dared to venture beyond standard government blueprints, this unique structure tells the story of America's conservation movement through its very timbers. Its distinctive design and enduring presence have earned it eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places, making every stay a chance to sleep within living history.
Weather and SeasonsEach season transforms Yellow Mule Cabin into a different world entirely. Winter wraps the landscape in a pristine blanket of snow, with temperatures dancing between a crisp 2°F and 16°F, while roughly 2.36 inches of fresh powder falls each week during peak season. As spring melts into summer, the mercury rises to comfortable levels, revealing carpets of vibrant wildflowers beneath crystal-clear mountain skies. The changing seasons offer visitors dramatically different experiences—from cozy winter evenings by the wood stove to summer days exploring sun-drenched meadows.
ElevationPerched at a breathtaking 8,650 feet above sea level, Yellow Mule Cabin offers the rare opportunity to wake up closer to the clouds. This lofty elevation promises crisp mountain air, spectacular vistas, and the kind of challenging terrain that rewards hikers with unforgettable backcountry adventures. Here, the thin air whispers tales of high-altitude wilderness waiting to be explored.
Natural Features and SceneryNestled at the enchanting intersection where alpine meadow meets evergreen forest, Yellow Mule Cabin commands views that change with each passing hour. Winter transforms the surrounding glaciated peaks into a photographer's dream of pristine white sculpture, while summer paints the meadows in brilliant wildflower hues. This dramatic backdrop serves as home to some of North America's most magnificent wildlife—grizzly bears lumber through the forests, wolves sing to the moon, and elusive Canada lynx pad silently through the shadows. Mountain lions, deer, and elk complete this living wilderness tapestry.
Geological RegionThe Madison Mountain Range cradles Yellow Mule Cabin in its rugged embrace, offering visitors a front-row seat to millions of years of geological drama. Ancient glaciers carved these peaks into their current majestic forms, leaving behind a landscape of soaring summits and verdant valleys. The mixed evergreen forests whisper with the movement of grizzly bears and wolves, while expansive meadows burst with summer wildflowers that attract deer, elk, and moose. This pristine backcountry sanctuary also shelters rare species like bighorn sheep and the elusive Canada lynx, making every moment here a potential wildlife encounter in one of the West's last great wilderness areas.
