About this campground
Nestled deep within the Madison Range at 7,000 feet, Beaver Creek Cabin beckons adventurers seeking an authentic Montana wilderness experience. This rustic hideaway in the Custer Gallatin National Forest strips away modern distractions, offering instead a simple wood stove, four walls, and endless opportunities to explore one of the West's most pristine landscapes. Here, primitive meets paradise as visitors trade convenience for connection with the raw beauty of the Rocky Mountains.
The campground features primitive cabin accommodation only and does not include traditional tent or RV sites.
Historical SignificancePerched on the doorstep of Yellowstone National Park, Beaver Creek Cabin serves as a gateway to one of America's most storied landscapes. This proximity places visitors within reach of a region that has captivated explorers, artists, and naturalists for generations—where geothermal wonders meet ancient ecosystems, and where the American conservation movement found its most powerful voice.
Weather and SeasonsMother Nature rules supreme at Beaver Creek Cabin, painting each season with dramatic brushstrokes. Winter transforms the landscape into a crystalline wonderland where temperatures can plunge to a bone-chilling -8°F, making the cabin's wood stove your most trusted companion through long, starlit nights. Summer brings gentler moods and wildflower meadows, while spring and fall serve up their own adventures—sometimes closing access roads with snow or mud, reminding visitors that wilderness travel requires flexibility and preparation.
ElevationAt 7,000 feet above sea level, Beaver Creek Cabin occupies a sweet spot in the vertical world of the Madison Range. Tucked into a protective wooded canyon alongside its namesake creek, the cabin offers that rare combination of mountain elevation and sheltered comfort—high enough to touch the edge of the alpine world, yet nestled low enough to enjoy the embrace of towering conifers.
Natural Features and SceneryBeneath the watchful gaze of mighty Hilgard Peak—the Madison Range's 11,316-foot crown jewel—Beaver Creek Cabin sits cradled in a wooded canyon where wilderness still reigns. Ancient forests stretch in every direction toward the Lee Metcalf Wilderness boundary, while Beaver Creek whispers past with stories of snowmelt and stone. This is prime habitat for the Rockies' most iconic residents: grizzly bears lumber through berry patches, bull elk bugle across ridgelines, moose browse in willow thickets, and bighorn sheep navigate impossible cliffs with gravity-defying grace.
Geological RegionThe Madison Range provides a spectacular geological backdrop for Beaver Creek Cabin, showcasing millions of years of mountain-building drama frozen in stone. From your canyon refuge near bubbling Beaver Creek, the landscape rises dramatically toward Hilgard Peak's 11,316-foot summit—the highest point in this rugged chain. This corner of the Custer Gallatin National Forest reveals the raw power of tectonic forces, where ancient seafloors have been thrust skyward and sculpted by ice and time into today's soaring peaks and hidden valleys.
