About this campground

Step back in time at Meadow Creek Cabin, where a 15-mile journey by foot or horseback transports you to a hidden sanctuary deep within a dramatic canyon. This authentic 1920s guard station beckons adventurers seeking true wilderness solitude, where the rhythms of modern life fade away and the whispers of history echo through towering pines. Here, in this remote backcountry haven along the rushing waters of Meadow Creek, you'll discover what it means to truly disconnect and immerse yourself in untamed nature.
Meadow Creek Cabin offers rustic accommodations suitable for small groups, with up to six guests permitted. The cabin is accessible only via a 15-mile hike or horseback ride.
Historical SignificanceThese weathered walls have witnessed nearly a century of forest service history. Built in the 1920s when rangers patrolled vast wilderness territories on horseback, Meadow Creek Cabin served as a vital outpost for those protecting these ancient forests. By 1932, it had evolved into a field crew workstation, sheltering the hardy souls who maintained trails and fought fires in this rugged backcountry. Just beyond, the historic Indian Hill Lookout stands sentinel, adding another layer to this landscape's rich tapestry of human and natural history.
Weather and SeasonsThe canyon's embrace creates its own microclimate, where crisp mountain air mingles with the possibility of sudden weather shifts that add to the adventure. With daytime temperatures hovering around 41°F and nights dipping to a brisk 28°F, visitors should come prepared for the mountain's moods. Rain, snow, or sunshine—each weather pattern paints the landscape differently, from misty mornings that shroud the pines in mystery to crystal-clear days when every ridge line stands sharp against azure skies.
ElevationCradled within the dramatic embrace of steep canyon walls, the cabin sits at the convergence of mountain and water, where elevation creates a world apart. Though the exact altitude remains part of the canyon's mysteries, the surrounding peaks and plunging valley walls create a natural amphitheater that amplifies both the silence and the symphony of wilderness sounds—from the creek's constant murmur to the bugling of elk echoing off ancient stone.
Natural Features and SceneryTowering pines stand guard over this pristine sanctuary, their branches filtering sunlight into a perpetual twilight beneath the canopy. The crystalline waters of Meadow Creek tumble over smooth stones, so pure and cold they seem to capture liquid starlight. This untouched ecosystem shelters an impressive cast of wildlife: black bears fish for trout in the shallows, while elk and moose browse meadow edges at dawn. Both mule and whitetail deer pick their way along game trails, ever watchful for the shadow of mountain lions. Lucky visitors might glimpse the sleek forms of river otters at play, industrious beavers engineering their domains, or even spot the elusive Coeur d'Alene Salamander—a rare jewel of these northern waters.
Geological RegionMeadow Creek has carved its signature through countless millennia, creating this spectacular canyon that serves as your wilderness home. As a tributary feeding the legendary Selway River, these waters have sculpted a geological masterpiece of exposed rock faces, hidden grottos, and smooth-worn boulders. The canyon's steep walls reveal the earth's ancient story in layers of stone, while the perpetually cold, clean waters speak to the purity of this protected watershed—a testament to nature's enduring power to create beauty through patient persistence.
