About this campground

Deep within the expansive Withlacoochee State Forest lies the Citrus Tract Primitive Camp Zone Loop C, a secluded wilderness retreat that beckons adventurous souls seeking authentic backcountry experiences. This remote, hike-in sanctuary offers intrepid campers the chance to disconnect from the modern world and immerse themselves in Florida's untamed natural beauty. Here, beneath ancient oak canopies and star-studded skies, visitors can explore winding trails, observe diverse wildlife in their natural habitat, and rediscover the simple pleasures of primitive camping far from the crowds.
Citrus Tract Primitive Camp Zone Loop C is exclusively a primitive camping area. It requires hiking in and out, and facilities are minimal with no water or restrooms.
Historical SignificanceThis land whispers stories of Florida's rich past, from the Native Americans who first named the Withlacoochee—meaning 'crooked river' in their ancient tongue—to the pioneers who carved out settlements in this wilderness. Nearby, the haunting Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins stand as silent sentinels, their weathered stones bearing witness to the area's plantation era. These cultural treasures transform a simple camping trip into a journey through time, where every trail might lead to remnants of Florida's fascinating heritage.
Weather and SeasonsThe rhythms of Florida's seasons paint a ever-changing canvas for outdoor enthusiasts at this wilderness camp. During the cooler months, crisp, dry air creates perfect conditions for hiking and evening campfires, making these weeks the prime time for your backcountry adventure. As temperatures rise, afternoon showers bring refreshing relief and transform the forest into a lush, vibrant ecosystem. Savvy campers plan their visits during the dry season's comfortable temperatures, when clear skies reveal spectacular stargazing opportunities and morning mists drift through the pine forests.
ElevationWhile Florida may be known for its gentle topography, the subtle undulations of this landscape create diverse microenvironments that surprise and delight observant visitors. The camp's position within Florida's characteristic terrain offers easy hiking for all skill levels while still providing enough variation to keep the scenery interesting and the experience engaging.
Natural Features and SceneryA masterpiece of natural Florida awaits discovery in this pristine corner of the Withlacoochee State Forest. Towering southern magnolias spread their glossy leaves overhead while majestic oaks draped in Spanish moss create natural cathedrals along the trails. In autumn, the landscape erupts in unexpected color as wildflowers paint the forest floor in brilliant hues. Lucky visitors might spot a bald eagle soaring above the canopy or catch a glimpse of white-tailed deer moving silently through the morning mist. The open pine sand hills offer breathtaking vistas, while dense woodlands provide intimate encounters with nature's smaller wonders.
Geological RegionThe Citrus Tract showcases Florida's diverse ecosystems in stunning detail, from sun-drenched pine sand hills to mysterious, canopy-covered trails that wind through ancient forests. This remarkable landscape cradles the pristine Withlacoochee River and its tributaries—waterways so pure they've earned designation as Outstanding Florida Waters. Slash pines stretch skyward while southern magnolias perfume the air with their sweet fragrance. This protected haven serves as home to an incredible array of wildlife, from the majestic bald eagle to the prehistoric-looking gopher tortoise, creating an outdoor classroom where every visit reveals new natural treasures.
