About this campground

Escape to the enchanting Lone Cone Cabin, a hidden sanctuary nestled deep within the expansive Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests. This thoughtfully appointed retreat combines rustic charm with modern comforts, featuring a fully equipped kitchen for hearty mountain meals, a refreshing shower and flush toilet for convenience, and a sturdy horse corral for equestrian adventures. Whether you're tracking elk at dawn, exploring alpine trails, or simply watching wildlife from your porch, this cabin serves as your perfect basecamp for authentic Colorado wilderness experiences. Complimentary firewood ensures cozy evenings by the fire after days spent immersed in nature.
The Lone Cone Cabin offers a single type of accommodation: a fully equipped rustic cabin. No tent, RV, or group camping options are provided.
Historical SignificanceStep back in time at this cherished Forest Service cabin, where weathered walls whisper tales of rangers, wildlife biologists, and backcountry travelers who've sought shelter here for generations. Each creak of the floorboards and patina on the fixtures tells a story of dedication to protecting these wild lands. Visitors consistently praise the cabin's authentic character, describing their stays as meaningful connections to Forest Service heritage—a rare opportunity to live, if only briefly, in the footsteps of those who've stewarded these forests.
Weather and SeasonsExperience the cabin's magic as summer wildflowers give way to autumn's golden aspen displays. These prime seasons offer comfortable temperatures and endless blue skies perfect for outdoor adventures. Mountain storms occasionally sweep through, bringing dramatic skies and the possibility of temporary power outages that only add to the authentic backcountry experience. Winter transforms the landscape into a pristine wonderland, where deep snow creates a serene, isolated retreat—though adventurous souls should prepare for significant snow accumulation and drifts that enhance the cabin's remote charm.
ElevationPerched at an impressive 9,200 feet above sea level, the cabin sits like a jewel in a crown of evergreen forests and wildflower meadows. At this elevation, the air is crisp and pure, the stars shine with extraordinary brilliance, and the landscape stretches endlessly before you. The high-altitude setting creates a natural sanctuary where aspens shimmer in the breeze and mountain vistas unfold in every direction.
Natural Features and SceneryWake to the whisper of wind through towering spruce and the gentle rustle of aspen leaves in this spectacular high-country meadow. The cabin's setting at 9,200 feet offers front-row seats to nature's greatest shows: the majestic Lone Cone Peak rising dramatically against painted skies, Colorado sunsets that set the horizon ablaze with color, and after dark, a celestial theater where the Milky Way stretches across the heavens in breathtaking clarity. This pristine wilderness setting, where ancient forests meet alpine meadows, creates an ever-changing canvas of natural beauty.
Geological RegionDiscover a landscape sculpted by millennia of natural forces, where your cabin rests in an expansive mountain meadow cradled by ancient forests. At 9,200 feet, this unique geological setting showcases the dramatic interplay between volcanic peaks and glacial valleys. Lone Cone Peak dominates the horizon—a volcanic remnant that stands as a sentinel over forests of aspen and spruce. As evening approaches, witness how this high-altitude amphitheater transforms into nature's gallery, displaying Colorado's legendary sunsets in colors that defy description.
