About this campground
Perched at 6,100 feet in the wild northeastern reaches of Lassen Volcanic National Park, Butte Lake Stock Corral offers an authentic backcountry experience for adventurers seeking solitude and natural beauty. This remote haven welcomes equestrian enthusiasts with dedicated stock corrals, while the crystalline waters of Butte Lake beckon just a short walk away. Whether you're casting for trophy trout at dawn, paddling across mirror-smooth waters, or setting off on the legendary Pacific Crest Trail, this campground serves as your gateway to endless mountain adventures. Though 45 minutes from the main park road, the journey rewards you with uncrowded trails and pristine wilderness that feels worlds away from civilization.
Butte Lake Stock Corral offers facilities specifically designed for equestrian camping in a remote, natural environment. The amenities cater to groups and individuals traveling with pack animals.
Historical SignificanceYou're camping in one of Earth's most dynamic volcanic landscapes, where 300 active volcanic domes tell the story of our planet's fiery creation. Throughout the park, mud pots bubble like nature's cauldrons while steam vents whisper ancient secrets into the mountain air. The mighty Lassen Peak stands as the southernmost active volcano in the Cascade Range, a testament to the powerful forces that continue to shape this extraordinary landscape beneath your feet.
Weather and SeasonsWinter transforms this high-country retreat into a snow-laden wonderland, with temperatures hovering between 23.8°F and 36.9°F as deep snowpack blankets the landscape. The magic truly unfolds during summer and early fall, when warm days give way to crisp mountain evenings perfect for campfire stories. These golden months offer the ideal window for exploration, with clear skies revealing endless vistas and comfortable conditions for all your outdoor pursuits.
ElevationAt 6,100 feet above sea level, this mountain sanctuary offers a refreshing escape where even summer evenings carry a delightful chill that invites cozy campfires and warm sleeping bags. The thin mountain air adds an invigorating quality to every breath, reminding you that you've ascended into a realm where eagles soar and the stars shine with exceptional brilliance. Come prepared for the altitude's gentle embrace—it's all part of the authentic high-country experience.
Natural Features and SceneryTowering Ponderosa pines stand sentinel over a landscape sculpted by volcanic forces, their vanilla-scented bark a sweet contrast to the dramatic black lava flow that spills into Butte Lake's sapphire waters. This geological masterpiece creates an otherworldly paddling experience, where kayakers glide past ancient lava formations reflected in pristine waters. As one of the park's biodiversity hotspots, the area bursts with life—700 species of wildflowers paint the meadows in seasonal color while 250 vertebrate species, from black bears to mountain bluebirds, call this volcanic wonderland home.
Geological RegionHere at the crossroads of three mighty mountain ranges—where the volcanic Cascades meet the granite Sierra Nevada and the ancient Great Basin—you'll discover a geological symphony written in stone and soil. The campground rests on volcanic earth that tells the story of explosive eruptions and patient forest regeneration. This unique convergence of geological forces has created a landscape unlike anywhere else in North America, where Ponderosa pines sink their roots into nutrient-rich volcanic soils and active volcanic domes remind visitors that the Earth's creative forces are far from dormant.
