About this campground

Nestled in the heart of Reds Meadow Valley, Upper Soda Springs Campground offers an intimate escape where the melodic San Joaquin River becomes your constant companion. This tranquil retreat features 28 thoughtfully spaced campsites, each equipped with bear-proof lockers, picnic tables, and access to pristine pit toilets and fresh potable water. Adventure beckons from every direction—cast a line into the crystal-clear river waters, set out on scenic trails that wind through ancient forests, or venture to the nearby geological wonder of Devil's Postpile National Monument and the breathtaking cascade of Rainbow Falls.
The campground offers standard tent and combined camping sites. RV camping is not recommended due to the narrow roads and irregular parking aprons.
Historical SignificanceUpper Soda Springs sits at a crossroads of natural and cultural heritage, where the legendary Pacific Crest Trail passes nearby and the awe-inspiring Devil's Postpile National Monument stands as a testament to volcanic forces from ages past. This sacred landscape has drawn adventurers, naturalists, and those seeking solace in wilderness for generations, creating a tapestry of human connection with the untamed beauty of the Sierra Nevada.
Weather and SeasonsAt 7,600 feet elevation, Upper Soda Springs delivers a true mountain experience with dramatic seasonal transformations. Summer days warm your spirit while crisp alpine nights remind you to pack that extra layer—temperatures can plunge surprisingly low once the sun dips behind the peaks. As autumn arrives, the campground prepares for its winter slumber, becoming a snow-locked wonderland inaccessible to vehicles but cherished by those who remember its summer magic.
ElevationPerched at 7,600 feet in the Sierra Nevada, this high-altitude haven offers the rare combination of accessibility and alpine atmosphere. The elevation gifts visitors with refreshingly cool summer temperatures and star-filled nights of exceptional clarity, though it also means the campground surrenders to deep snows each winter, closing its gates until the mountain thaw returns each spring.
Natural Features and SceneryA cathedral of towering lodgepole pines shelters the campground, their straight trunks reaching skyward like nature's columns. The San Joaquin River threads through the sites, offering prime waterfront locations where the gentle murmur of flowing water provides nature's perfect white noise. Dramatic bare-faced rock walls rise in the distance, creating a stunning backdrop that shifts from golden at sunrise to deep purple at dusk. While riverside sites boast lush surroundings and soothing water melodies, the rocky terrain sites offer their own rugged charm with unobstructed views of the surrounding peaks.
Geological RegionUpper Soda Springs rests within the embrace of Inyo National Forest's Reds Meadow Valley, a geological wonderland where the San Joaquin River has carved its path through ancient volcanic terrain. Surrounded by the pristine Ansel Adams Wilderness, the campground serves as your basecamp for exploring a landscape sculpted by fire and ice. Towering lodgepole pine forests give way to dramatic bare-rock faces, creating a diverse ecosystem where the forces that shaped the Sierra Nevada remain visible in every vista.
