About this campground

Perched high in the pines 22 miles north of Flagstaff, Kendrick Cabin invites you to step back in time to a simpler era. This charming three-bedroom retreat, originally serving as a Forest Service fire guard station in the 1960s, now offers modern adventurers a gateway to the stunning Kendrick Park wilderness. Wake to panoramic mountain vistas, spot elk grazing in nearby meadows, and set off on countless trails that wind through this elevated paradise where history meets natural splendor.
The campground provides cabin accommodations with off-grid rustic features. "This is a gem. Just the right balance of off-grid, rustic, and modern conveniences."
Historical SignificanceMore than just walls and a roof, Kendrick Cabin stands as a testament to the Forest Service's legacy of protecting these precious woodlands. Built in the 1960s when fire lookouts kept vigilant watch over the surrounding peaks, this authentic guard station has witnessed decades of forest history. Today, visitors can imagine the solitary life of fire watchers while exploring the rich tapestry of natural and cultural heritage woven throughout the Kendrick Park area.
Weather and SeasonsEach season paints Kendrick Park in dramatically different hues. Summer brings blissfully cool mountain air—a welcome escape from desert heat below. As autumn arrives, crisp mornings give way to golden afternoons, though evenings demand warm layers as temperatures dip toward freezing. Winter transforms the landscape into a snow-dusted wonderland, while spring's arrival melts away the white blanket to reveal wildflower-dotted meadows. At this elevation, weather can shift quickly, making every visit a unique adventure.
ElevationAt 7,910 feet above sea level, Kendrick Cabin sits in that sweet spot where the air turns refreshingly thin and the views stretch endlessly. This lofty perch delivers naturally air-conditioned summers and crystalline night skies that seem close enough to touch. The elevation creates a unique microclimate where aspens shimmer against evergreens and the horizon extends for miles in every direction.
Natural Features and SceneryImagine waking to a landscape that seems plucked from a nature documentary. From your doorstep at 7,910 feet, rolling grasslands give way to dense ponderosa forests, all framed by the majestic silhouettes of the San Francisco Peaks and Kendrick Mountain. This is prime wildlife territory—elk bugle across the meadows at dawn, mule deer bound through the trees, pronghorn antelope grace the open spaces, and yes, mountain lions prowl these wild lands, reminding visitors that this is their home first.
Geological RegionKendrick Cabin rests in one of Northern Arizona's most fascinating geological theaters. Nestled at the base of the San Francisco Peaks—the eroded heart of an ancient volcano—the cabin sits at 7,910 feet where volcanic soils have created a patchwork of environments. Here, expansive grasslands merge with pine-scented forests, creating diverse habitats shaped by millions of years of volcanic activity. The surrounding peaks stand as monuments to the Earth's fiery past, their slopes telling stories written in stone and ash.
