About this campground

Nestled in the shadow of Apache Maid Mountain, this enchanting forest cabin whispers stories of Arizona's ranching heritage. Built in 1909 by cattle baron Charles Babbitt, this secluded retreat immerses visitors in a grove of towering ponderosa pines just outside Sedona. Here, modern adventurers can experience the authentic charm of a bygone era while enjoying the solitude that once sheltered cowboys and forest rangers alike.
Apache Maid Cabin offers cabin-style lodging and supports up to six occupants. It is a unique option for visitors seeking a secluded and historic stay.
Historical SignificanceThis storied cabin began its life in 1909 when Charles Babbitt erected it as a remote outpost for his vast cattle operation. Through the decades, it sheltered weathered cattlemen who drove herds across these pine-dotted hills, and later served as a crucial ranger station where Forest Service guardians protected these wild lands. Today's lovingly restored cabin preserves every weathered beam and worn floorboard, allowing guests to literally walk in the footsteps of Arizona's frontier pioneers.
Weather and SeasonsSummer days unfold with brilliant sunshine filtering through pine boughs, bringing warm, dry weather perfect for outdoor exploration. Afternoon skies occasionally darken with dramatic thunderstorms that roll across the high country, transforming the landscape with nature's light show. During monsoon season, these rains can turn forest roads into slippery pathways and create cozy indoor moments as storms drum against the cabin's historic walls.
ElevationPerched at 6,382 feet in Arizona's high country, the cabin offers a refreshing escape from desert heat. This lofty elevation brings crisp morning air, comfortable summer temperatures, and those spectacular afternoon thunderstorms that paint the sky with lightning and fill the forest with the scent of rain on pine needles.
Natural Features and SceneryTowering ponderosa pines create a natural cathedral around the cabin, their vanilla-scented bark and emerald canopy providing endless fascination. The shimmering waters of Stoneman Lake beckon nearby, while the dramatic escarpment of the Mogollon Rim rises in the distance. At 6,382 feet, this pine-scented sanctuary basks in golden summer sunshine, punctuated by afternoon tempests that sweep across the forest with theatrical grandeur.
Geological RegionThe cabin rests within the embrace of Arizona's vast ponderosa pine belt, near the edge of the spectacular Mogollon Rim. This ancient geological wonder stretches for 200 miles across central Arizona, its dramatic slopes climbing between 5,000 and 7,000 feet to create a forested highland that feels worlds away from the desert below.
