About this campground

Nestled in the heart of Tongass National Forest, Twelvemile Cabin beckons adventurers seeking an authentic Alaskan wilderness experience. This fully accessible retreat strikes the perfect balance between seclusion and accessibility, inviting you to disconnect from the modern world while remaining within reach of civilization. Step into a landscape shaped by generations of logging heritage, where towering old-growth reserves stand as living monuments to the forest's resilience and renewal.
Twelvemile Cabin is a formally structured campground offering cabin lodging. It does not feature primitive campsites, tent areas, or RV accommodations.
Historical SignificanceWalk in the footsteps of Alaska's logging pioneers at Twelvemile Inlet, where the forest tells stories of industry and regeneration. Though nature has reclaimed the old camps and log transfer facilities that once bustled along these shores, their legacy lives on in the surrounding landscape. This hidden history adds layers of meaning to your stay, connecting you to the generations who worked these waters and woods before the area's transformation into protected wilderness.
Weather and SeasonsExperience the gentle rhythm of Southeast Alaska's temperate climate, where September brings crisp mornings around 47°F warming to pleasant afternoons near 62°F. Light breezes whisper through the forest canopy at just under 5 mph, while occasional rain showers—typical of this rainforest ecosystem—add to the region's mystical atmosphere. Summer visitors are rewarded with nearly endless daylight, perfect for extended explorations and midnight wildlife watching under the lingering twilight.
ElevationPositioned at the gentle interface where forest meets sea, the cabin rests near sea level in classic Southeast Alaskan fashion. This coastal positioning offers the best of both worlds—easy access to marine adventures while maintaining proximity to upland forest trails and wildlife viewing opportunities.
Natural Features and SceneryImmerse yourself in a living tapestry of young Sitka spruce and western hemlock, where new growth mingles with ancient forest wisdom. The nearby estuary serves as nature's grand theater, hosting performances by elegant sandhill cranes, elusive wolves, and foraging black bears. During migration seasons, the skies come alive with countless birds following age-old flyways, transforming your cabin stay into a front-row seat to one of nature's greatest spectacles.
Geological RegionDiscover the raw beauty of Southeast Alaska from your base on Prince of Wales Island, the third-largest island in the United States. Here in the Tongass—America's largest national forest—you'll explore a landscape where emerald forests cascade down to productive estuaries, and protected old-growth reserves harbor trees that have stood for centuries. This temperate rainforest ecosystem represents one of the planet's last intact wilderness areas, offering glimpses of what much of the Pacific Northwest looked like before European settlement.
