About this campground

Deep in the wilderness of Tongass National Forest, Raven Cabin offers adventurous souls a true Alaskan escape along the legendary Situk River. This remote public-use retreat beckons anglers and hunters seeking an authentic backcountry experience, where self-sufficiency meets stunning natural beauty. While the cabin provides shelter from the elements, visitors must pack in their own water, fuel, and sleeping gear – a small price for the solitude and pristine wilderness that awaits. Whether you arrive by trail, boat, or wheeled aircraft, you'll find yourself immersed in one of Alaska's most untouched landscapes.
Raven Cabin is a specialized camping facility offering a single cabin structure that accommodates up to five people. It does not support tent camping, group camping, or RV camping.
Historical SignificanceWhile Raven Cabin may not bear ancient markings or historical plaques, it stands as a testament to Alaska's enduring tradition of wilderness shelters that have provided refuge to generations of hunters, anglers, and adventurers exploring the vast Tongass National Forest.
Weather and SeasonsThe cabin experiences Alaska's dramatic seasonal shifts in all their glory. Spring and summer bring the peak season, with comfortable temperatures that make outdoor adventures a joy – perfect for casting lines in the Situk or exploring forest trails. As autumn arrives, the landscape transforms into a tapestry of colors before winter's embrace brings snow and freezing temperatures that test even seasoned outdoors enthusiasts. Trail access can become challenging during seasonal flooding, adding an element of adventure to your journey and reminding visitors to check conditions before departing.
ElevationNestled at forest level along the river corridor, the cabin sits in the heart of the temperate rainforest ecosystem that defines Southeast Alaska.
Natural Features and SceneryTowering Sitka spruce and western hemlock create a cathedral-like canopy above the cabin, while stately cottonwoods line the nearby riverbanks. In summer, the forest floor erupts with wild blueberry bushes that offer both scenic beauty and delicious trail snacks. This is the domain of Alaska's most iconic wildlife – majestic moose browse through the understory, while brown bears fish the river's productive waters. Overhead, bald eagles soar on thermals, and the cabin's namesake ravens fill the air with their distinctive calls, creating a wilderness symphony that lulls visitors to sleep each night.
Geological RegionSet within the temperate rainforest ecosystem of Southeast Alaska, the cabin occupies prime real estate in one of the world's largest intact old-growth forests. The Situk River corridor has carved its path through this ancient landscape, creating a rich riparian zone where massive spruce, hemlock, and cottonwood trees thrive in the nutrient-rich soils. Beneath the towering canopy, dense thickets of blueberry bushes carpet the forest floor, thriving in the dappled sunlight of this pristine wilderness sanctuary.
