About this campground
Nestled on the pristine shores of Mendenhall Lake, this enchanting 69-site campground offers front-row seats to one of Alaska's most spectacular natural wonders. Whether you choose an RV spot with full amenities, a traditional tent site, or venture to one of the secluded walk-in locations, you'll wake each morning to breathtaking views of the iconic Mendenhall Glacier reflected in crystal-clear waters. Modern comforts blend seamlessly with wilderness adventure here, where accessible bathrooms with hot showers, sturdy fire pits, and well-placed picnic tables ensure your stay is as comfortable as it is memorable.
Mendenhall Campground accommodates various camping styles, including RV camping, tent camping, and walk-in backpacker sites. Primitive camping is also offered.
Historical SignificanceSet within the majestic Tongass National Forest—America's largest national forest—this campground serves as your gateway to centuries of natural and cultural heritage. Winding trails lead you through landscapes shaped by ancient glaciers and stories of the Tlingit people who have called this region home for thousands of years. Each path reveals layers of history, from the geological forces that carved these valleys to the enduring connection between the land and its first inhabitants.
Weather and SeasonsExperience the magic of Alaska's temperate rainforest, where summer brings endless daylight and gentle mists that dance through ancient trees. The prime camping season stretches through the warmer months when wildflowers carpet the forest floor and temperatures invite outdoor exploration. As autumn approaches, the landscape transforms into a tapestry of gold and crimson, while winter brings a hushed beauty with snow-dusted peaks and the occasional glimpse of northern lights dancing above the glacier.
ElevationAt just 100 feet above sea level, this wonderfully accessible campground spreads across gentle, level terrain that welcomes visitors of all abilities. The low elevation creates a unique microclimate where coastal influences meet glacial breezes, offering comfortable conditions and easy navigation throughout your stay. This thoughtfully designed landscape ensures that everyone can experience the magic of glacier country without challenging climbs or steep grades.
Natural Features and SceneryImmerse yourself in a landscape where ancient glacial moraines tell stories of ice ages past, and towering spruce-hemlock forests create cathedral-like canopies overhead. In late summer, the forest floor bursts with wild blueberries, inviting leisurely picking sessions between adventures. The crystalline waters of Mendenhall Lake mirror the surrounding peaks, while the thundering cascade of Nugget Falls provides a dramatic soundtrack to your wilderness escape. This is nature's amphitheater at its finest, where every view deserves a moment of quiet appreciation.
Geological RegionDiscover a geological wonderland where the mighty Tongass National Forest meets the edge of time itself. Here, at the threshold of Mendenhall Lake and its namesake glacier, you'll witness the raw power of nature's sculptors. Ancient glacial moraines create a fascinating topography dotted with jewel-like lakes and mysterious ponds, while the temperate rainforest thrives in the glacier's misty breath. Surrounding peaks soar between 4,000 and 7,000 feet, their slopes telling the story of ice, rock, and time—a testament to the dynamic forces that continue to shape this extraordinary corner of Southeast Alaska.
