About this campground

Escape to the untamed heart of Alaska at Little Shaheen Cabin, where wilderness solitude meets raw adventure on remote Admiralty Island. This primitive forest retreat in the Tongass National Forest beckons those seeking authentic connection with nature—paddle across mirror-still waters, cast your line into pristine fishing spots, trek through ancient forests, or simply watch eagles soar overhead from your cabin doorstep. Here, far from civilization's reach, every moment becomes an opportunity to rediscover the rhythm of the wild.
Little Shaheen Cabin caters to visitors seeking a remote cabin experience within a wilderness setting. It is not suitable for traditional tent camping or RV camping.
Historical SignificanceThe spirit of the Tlingit people flows through every stream and whispers in every breeze across Admiralty Island. Their ancestral wisdom lives on in Angoon, the island's sole permanent settlement—a traditional native village where ancient stories merge with modern life. This cultural tapestry weaves throughout the landscape, reminding visitors that these forests and waters have sustained communities for countless generations.
Weather and SeasonsFrom mid-May through November, Hasselborg Lake sheds its icy armor and transforms into a paddler's paradise. Yet Mother Nature rules supreme in this wilderness sanctuary—sudden storms can sweep across the island, potentially extending your adventure by 2-5 days. Winter visitors should come prepared for a true Arctic experience, where snow blankets the forest floor and ice crystals dance in the air, creating a crystalline wonderland that demands respect and proper preparation.
ElevationPerched at 300 feet above sea level, the cabin offers a perfect vantage point where mountain meets forest meets water. This gentle elevation gifts visitors with sweeping views across the wilderness while keeping you close enough to the lake for easy water access—a sweet spot that balances panoramic beauty with practical adventure.
Natural Features and SceneryStep into a living cathedral of ancient spruce and hemlock giants that have stood sentinel for centuries along Hasselborg Lake's pristine shoreline. The surrounding Kootznoowoo Wilderness unfolds like nature's masterpiece—glacier-born streams tumble through emerald forests, mysterious muskeg meadows open like windows in the canopy, and jagged peaks pierce the sky at over 3,000 feet. This is Alaska at its most magnificent, where every sunrise paints the wilderness in gold and every sunset ignites the peaks in alpenglow.
Geological RegionDeep within the legendary Tongass National Forest, Admiralty Island rises from the Inside Passage like a fortress of green. The Kootznoowoo Wilderness—meaning 'Fortress of the Bears' in Tlingit—encompasses this ecological treasure where ancient spruce and hemlock forests carpet the land, glacier-carved valleys cradle pristine lakes, and spongy muskeg bogs create unique ecosystems found nowhere else. This geological wonderland represents millions of years of ice, water, and time sculpting one of Earth's last great temperate rainforests.
