About this campground

Where the legendary landscapes of Yellowstone meet the dramatic peaks of the Tetons, Headwaters Campground at Flagg Ranch serves as your perfect basecamp for exploring two of America's most treasured national parks. This expansive outdoor haven offers 171 thoughtfully designed sites to suit every camping style: 34 peaceful tent-only spots tucked among the pines, 97 fully-equipped RV sites with all the modern hookups you need, and 40 cozy camper cabins that blend rustic charm with creature comforts. Here, you'll wake up knowing that both Yellowstone's geothermal wonders and Grand Teton's soaring mountains are just a short drive away.
The campground offers a range of accommodations including primitive tent sites, full-hookup RV sites, and rustic Camper Cabins. Group camping is not explicitly mentioned.
Historical SignificanceYour stay at Headwaters places you within the storied John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway, a living testament to one family's vision for conservation. This protected corridor stands as more than just a connection between Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks—it represents a crucial piece of America's conservation legacy. The Rockefeller family's dedication to preserving this pristine wilderness ensures that the same untouched landscapes that awed early explorers continue to inspire visitors today. As you explore the area, you're walking through history, following paths once traveled by Native Americans, mountain men, and the visionaries who fought to protect these lands for future generations.
Weather and SeasonsExperience the full drama of the Rocky Mountain seasons at Headwaters Campground. Summer days invite endless exploration under warm sunshine, while evenings cool down perfectly for campfire stories—just keep an eye on the sky for those spectacular afternoon thunderstorms that roll through the mountains. As autumn arrives, the landscape transforms into a photographer's dream with golden aspens set against crisp blue skies and frosty mornings that hint at winter's approach. When the snow flies, this high-country paradise becomes a winter wonderland buried in deep powder, creating a serene but challenging environment. Spring brings its own magic as the landscape awakens, though Mother Nature can't quite decide between gentle warmth and surprise snowstorms.
ElevationPerched high in the heart of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the campground sits at an elevation that brings you closer to the big Wyoming sky while keeping you connected to the surrounding wilderness.
Natural Features and SceneryStep outside your tent or RV into a landscape that defines the American West. Towering conifers create a natural cathedral above the campground, their evergreen branches filtering golden sunlight and providing homes for chattering squirrels and singing birds. In summer, rolling meadows burst with colorful wildflowers—Indian paintbrush, lupine, and mountain asters—creating a living canvas that changes with each passing week. The mighty Snake River flows nearby, its waters beginning their long journey to the Pacific, while just a short walk away, Polecat Creek reveals one of the area's best-kept secrets: bubbling thermal features that remind you of the volcanic forces sleeping beneath this peaceful landscape. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, from majestic elk grazing in the meadows to the occasional moose wandering along the creek.
Geological RegionNestled within the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway, Headwaters Campground occupies a geological crossroads where ancient forces have sculpted an extraordinary landscape. The surrounding conifer forests grow from soil enriched by millennia of volcanic activity, while meadows bloom with wildflowers in pockets where glaciers once carved the earth. The nearby Snake River has spent eons cutting through this terrain, creating the valley you see today, while Huckleberry Mountain stands as a testament to the powerful geological forces that built this region. Perhaps most intriguing are the thermal features along Polecat Creek—rare glimpses into the underground plumbing system that connects this area to Yellowstone's famous geysers and hot springs. This unique combination of forests, meadows, rivers, and geothermal activity creates a landscape that tells the story of our planet's incredible natural history.
