About this campground

Step into a piece of mountain history at Clearwater Big House, where rustic charm meets modern comfort in the heart of the northern Blue Mountains. This authentic chalet-style cabin invites you to experience the wilderness as generations of trappers and rangers once did, while enjoying cozy furnishings and endless outdoor adventures. Whether you're lacing up hiking boots for summer trails, saddling up for a horseback adventure, or strapping on snowshoes for a winter wonderland exploration, this historic retreat serves as your perfect basecamp for year-round mountain memories.
Clearwater Big House is a cabin rental facility ideal for groups, families, and visitors seeking a rustic, secluded experience within the Wenaha-Tucannon Wilderness.
Historical SignificanceThe weathered logs of Clearwater Big House whisper stories from nearly a century ago, when fur trappers first built this shelter in the roaring 1920s. As the wilderness began to be protected, forest rangers claimed the cabin as their backcountry outpost, watching over these pristine mountains. The 1930s brought the industrious hands of the Civilian Conservation Corps, who expanded the property with a sturdy barn, functional warehouse, and essential outhouse – structures that still stand as monuments to America's conservation legacy and the hardworking souls who shaped our public lands.
Weather and SeasonsExperience the dramatic seasonal transformation of the Blue Mountains, where sun-drenched summer days give way to pristine winter wonderlands. Summer visitors bask in moderate temperatures under crystal-clear mountain skies, perfect for exploring the surrounding wilderness. When winter arrives, the landscape transforms into a snow-lover's paradise, with heavy snowfall creating ideal conditions for snowshoeing and snowmobiling adventures. Be prepared for Mother Nature's moods – winter access requires proper snow equipment, and seasonal weather can create exciting challenges that add to the authentic mountain experience.
ElevationPerched at an impressive 5,600 feet above sea level, Clearwater Big House offers a refreshing escape from summer's heat and a front-row seat to winter's spectacular snow shows. This elevated sanctuary provides naturally air-conditioned summers where afternoon breezes carry the scent of pine and wildflowers. Come winter, the high altitude transforms the landscape into a thick blanket of powder snow, creating a magical alpine playground that feels worlds away from the valleys below.
Natural Features and SceneryWake up to panoramic views across gently rolling mountain slopes dotted with young Christmas trees that seem to have escaped from a holiday card. The landscape paints itself in layers – golden bunchgrass meadows give way to stands of stately lodgepole pine and aromatic subalpine fir, creating a diverse tapestry of mountain ecosystems. This pristine wilderness serves as nature's theater, where majestic elk graze at dawn, bighorn sheep navigate rocky outcrops, and mule deer emerge at dusk. While black bears, cougars, and coyotes remind visitors they're sharing this wild paradise, these elusive neighbors typically keep their distance, adding an element of authentic wilderness excitement to your stay.
Geological RegionDiscover the hidden gem of the northern Blue Mountains, where southeastern Washington meets northeastern Oregon in a landscape that defies expectations. Unlike their more dramatic Rocky Mountain cousins, these ancient peaks offer a gentler beauty – rolling slopes carpeted in native bunchgrass that ripples like golden waves in the mountain breeze. Forests of lodgepole pine and subalpine fir create natural cathedral groves, their straight trunks reaching skyward while providing shelter for the diverse wildlife that calls these mountains home. This unique geological region offers the perfect blend of accessibility and wilderness, where adventure seekers can explore pristine backcountry without conquering towering peaks.
