Best Time to Camp at White Oak Campground

Summer brings the fullest menu of activities. Expect highs in the mid-70s to mid-80s and cool nights in the 50s and 60s, with the lake open for swimming and all services staffed. July weekends fill up. Afternoon thunderstorms roll through regularly, so pack rain gear. Spring and fall deliver comfortable hiking weather and lighter crowds, though water at individual sites shuts off November through March due to freezing (hot water remains in the bathhouses). Winter camping is possible but cold, with limited on-site water and fewer services.

Planning Tips

    About White Oak Campground

White Oak sits in a heavily wooded mountain hollow inside Douthat State Park, one of four campground loops in this 4,500-acre preserve in the Allegheny Mountains of western Virginia. Sites are spacious and shaded, with level pads that handle both tents and small RVs. The park's 40-mile trail network and stocked mountain lake are within easy reach, but cell service is poor to nonexistent and bathhouse cleanliness can vary.
