About this campground

Step back in time at Payson Lakes Guard Station, where a meticulously preserved 1935 Civilian Conservation Corps cabin awaits your arrival. Perched at 8,000 feet in the heart of Utah's wilderness, this historic retreat invites you to experience the solitude and adventure of early forest rangers. Wake to crisp mountain air, explore pristine alpine lakes, and encounter the abundant wildlife that calls this high-country sanctuary home.
The Payson Lakes Guard Station offers unique historic lodging in the form of a cabin and bunkhouse. It does not accommodate traditional camping setups such as RVs or tents.
Historical SignificanceWalk through the same doorway that forest rangers have crossed since 1935, when dedicated Civilian Conservation Corps workers crafted this enduring cabin as part of President Roosevelt's New Deal. Every hand-hewn beam and weathered floorboard tells the story of America's conservation legacy, offering modern adventurers an authentic glimpse into the rugged life of early forest guardians.
Weather and SeasonsSummer transforms the guard station into an outdoor paradise, with warm days perfect for hiking and cool evenings ideal for stargazing. As one adventurous visitor discovered during a memorable May 2021 stay, winter's grip can linger well into spring at this elevation, blanketing the landscape in snow and creating a magical, if chilly, wonderland that tests your mountain mettle.
ElevationAt 8,000 feet above sea level, the guard station offers a true high-altitude escape where the air is thin, the views are endless, and the weather can shift from sunshine to snow in a heartbeat. This lofty perch means cooler temperatures year-round and the possibility of waking to fresh snowfall even when the valleys below are blooming with spring flowers.
Natural Features and SceneryImmerse yourself in a living postcard where towering Douglas firs mingle with shimmering aspens that dance golden in autumn winds. Summer brings a painter's palette of wildflowers carpeting the meadows, while the crystalline waters of McClelland, Box, and Big East Lakes mirror the sky. Keep your camera ready—curious deer often graze nearby at dawn, and the melodic calls of mountain birds provide nature's soundtrack.
Geological RegionDiscover your basecamp in the spectacular high country of Uinta National Forest, where ancient geological forces have sculpted a landscape of dramatic beauty. Dense forests of aspen and Douglas fir cloak the mountainsides, giving way to flower-strewn meadows and a trio of pristine alpine lakes—McClelland, Box, and Big East—each offering its own secluded shores and crystal-clear waters perfect for reflection and recreation.
