About this campground

Step back in time at Paradise Guard Station, where rustic mountain living meets modern adventure in the heart of Ashley National Forest. This historic cabin invites you to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature, offering a unique basecamp for exploring pristine alpine reservoirs, winding forest trails, and the untamed wilderness that has captivated visitors for over a century.
Paradise Guard Station offers a unique combination of cabin lodging and tent camping accommodations in a remote forest setting. RV camping is limited to one unit per site, and there are no hookups.
Historical SignificanceSince 1922, Paradise Guard Station has stood as a sentinel in these mountains, originally built by a district ranger who understood the magic of this remote location. Just a short hike away, the haunting remnants of the 1929 Bartlett Sawmill tell their own story—stone foundations and rusted machinery emerging from the forest floor, silent witnesses to the logging era that ended when fire claimed the mill in 1940.
Weather and SeasonsExperience the dramatic seasonal shifts that define life at 10,000 feet. Summer brings warm days perfect for hiking, though evenings remind you of the elevation as temperatures dip into the crisp 40s—ideal for gathering around a campfire. Winter transforms Paradise into a snow-laden wonderland, where accessing your mountain retreat becomes part of the adventure, often requiring snowshoes or cross-country skis to navigate the peaceful, snow-covered landscape.
ElevationPerched at a breathtaking 10,000 feet, Paradise Guard Station offers a true high-altitude escape where the air is crisp, the stars shine brighter, and every breath reminds you that you've left the ordinary world far below. This lofty elevation brings cooler temperatures year-round and that distinctive mountain atmosphere that makes colors seem more vivid and sounds carry differently through the thin air.
Natural Features and SceneryWake up to the gentle murmur of Paradise Creek flowing just beyond your doorstep, its crystal-clear waters beginning their journey to join the Whiterocks River below. Towering spruce and fir create a natural cathedral around the station, while wildflower-dotted meadows open up to reveal stunning vistas. Adventure beckons in every direction—from the mirror-like surfaces of Paradise Park Reservoir, Dead Lake, and Julius Park Reservoir to the mysterious depths of nearby canyons and cave systems waiting to be explored.
Geological RegionNestled within the remarkable Ashley-Karst National Geologic Recreation Area, Paradise Guard Station sits at the intersection of forest and geological wonder. Here, dense spruce-fir forests give way to expansive meadows, while Paradise Creek carves its path through ancient limestone formations. Below the surface, intricate cave networks wind through the earth, and dramatic canyons reveal millions of years of geological history—making this corner of Ashley National Forest a playground for both nature lovers and geology enthusiasts.
