About this campground

Imagine waking to the gentle lapping of the Green River against your boat, surrounded by towering canyon walls that glow amber in the morning sun. The Green River Float-In Campsites present an extraordinary adventure where 17 secluded sites await those willing to trade car convenience for boat-bound exploration. Spread across three distinct sections (A, B, and C), these riverside sanctuaries offer more than just a place to sleep – they're gateways to world-class trout fishing, dramatic high desert landscapes, and the kind of solitude that's increasingly rare in our connected world.
The Green River Float-In Campsites cater to primitive and tent camping enthusiasts, offering an off-the-grid experience. These sites are primarily accessible by boat, with some accessible on foot. 'Primitive' is the key theme, given the lack of potable water and minimal facilities.
Historical SignificanceThese waters carry stories as old as the canyons themselves. Following the same route that legendary explorer John Wesley Powell navigated in 1869, modern adventurers paddle through living history. Just upriver, the notorious Browns Park region harbors tales of the Wild West's most colorful characters – where Butch Cassidy and his gang once sought refuge among the maze of canyons and hidden valleys. Every bend in the river connects you to generations of Native peoples, pioneers, outlaws, and dreamers who found both challenge and sanctuary in these remote waters.
Weather and SeasonsSummer transforms the canyon into a sun-drenched paradise, with warm days perfect for river adventures and cool evenings ideal for stargazing from your riverside camp. As autumn arrives, the cottonwoods burst into golden flames against the red rock walls. Winter brings a different magic – crystalline air, possible snow dustings on the canyon rims, and a profound quietness broken only by the river's flow. Savvy paddlers know to check current water release schedules, as dam operations can influence river conditions and accessibility throughout the year.
Natural Features and SceneryNature has crafted a masterpiece where water meets stone in the high desert. Ancient junipers twist from rocky outcrops while stately cottonwoods and ponderosa pines provide precious shade along the riverbanks. In spring and early summer, the austere landscape surprises visitors with bursts of color as Indian paintbrush, evening primrose, and prickly pear cacti bloom in defiance of the arid climate. Eagles soar between the canyon walls, bighorn sheep navigate impossible ledges, and at dusk, beavers emerge to work on their riverside engineering projects.
Geological RegionHere in the heart of the Flaming Gorge region, millions of years of geological drama unfold in layers of red sandstone and limestone. The Green River has carved its signature through the high desert plateau, creating a corridor where shade-giving junipers cling to canyon walls, cottonwoods mark hidden springs, and towering ponderosa pines somehow thrive in pockets of deeper soil. The signature red cliffs – painted by iron oxide over millennia – create a natural amphitheater that changes color with each passing hour, from rose-gold at dawn to deep crimson at sunset.
