Reyes Creek Campground accommodates a variety of camping styles with its 24 sites, including tent camping, small RVs, and group sites.
Historical SignificanceJust a stone's throw from your campsite stands the legendary Camp Scheideck Lodge, a century-old testament to the enduring allure of these mountains. For over 100 years, this historic lodge has welcomed travelers seeking respite in the wilderness, its weathered timbers holding stories of countless adventures. As you explore the area, you're walking in the footsteps of generations of outdoor enthusiasts who found solace and adventure in these same hills and hollows.
Weather and SeasonsMother Nature writes her own rules at this mountain hideaway, where summer temperatures can soar into the 90s and occasionally touch 100°F, while winter nights bring crackling frost and bone-chilling cold. Perched high above the valleys, expect temperatures to run about 10 degrees cooler than the nearby towns of Ojai or Maricopa—a welcome relief during scorching summer days. Spring transforms the landscape into a verdant paradise, with snowmelt swelling the creek and wildflowers carpeting the hillsides in brilliant color. Pack layers and prepare for anything; the mountain weather here keeps you guessing.
ElevationAt 3,500 feet above sea level, Reyes Creek Campground occupies a sweet spot in the mountains where the air is crisp, the stars shine brighter, and summer's heat loses its edge. This elevated perch offers a natural air conditioning system, providing a refreshing escape when the valleys below shimmer with heat. The altitude brings cooler nights year-round, perfect for campfire gatherings and sound sleep under star-studded skies.
Natural Features and SceneryA living cathedral of riparian oak and cottonwood trees creates a dappled canopy overhead, their ancient branches providing welcome shade along the creek's banks. Reyes Creek itself is the heart of this campground, its year-round flow creating a ribbon of life through the landscape. The melodic sound of water tumbling over rocks provides a natural soundtrack to your stay. Keep your eyes skyward—red-tailed hawks patrol the thermals above the treeline, while the massive silhouette of a California condor might grace you with its prehistoric presence, wings spanning nearly ten feet as it rides the mountain currents.
Geological RegionThis enchanting streamside sanctuary sits at 3,500 feet, where nature has crafted the perfect mountain campground. Centuries-old riparian oaks and cottonwoods line the banks of Reyes Creek, their roots drinking deeply from the year-round flow that has carved this hidden valley. The generous shade they provide creates cool microclimates even on the warmest days. Above this verdant canopy, the sky becomes a theater of aerial acrobatics as red-tailed hawks dance on invisible currents. If fortune smiles, you might witness the awe-inspiring sight of a California condor—one of the world's rarest birds—soaring majestically overhead, a reminder of the wild and precious nature of this protected landscape.
