About this campground

Nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Sherando Lake Recreation Area's Family Campground beckons outdoor enthusiasts to discover why locals call it the 'jewel of the Blue Ridge.' Here, morning mist rises from two pristine mountain lakes while campers wake to birdsong echoing through towering forests. The thoughtfully designed campground features three distinct loops, each tailored to different camping styles—from those seeking electric hookups and modern conveniences like hot showers and secure food storage lockers, to adventurers preferring a more rustic experience. Miles of winding hiking trails begin right from your campsite, leading through ancient forests to breathtaking vistas that remind you why the Blue Ridge earned its name.
Sherando Lake Recreation Area accommodates a variety of camping styles, including primitive tent camping and RV camping with electric hookups.
Historical SignificanceYour camping adventure places you at the crossroads of American history and natural wonder. The legendary Blue Ridge Parkway winds nearby—a testament to Depression-era craftsmanship that has become one of America's most beloved scenic drives. This storied route connects generations of mountain culture, from Cherokee heritage to early European settlers who carved out lives in these hollowed hills. Modern explorers can venture to nearby Wintergreen Resort for a taste of contemporary mountain luxury, or journey into Shenandoah National Park, where President Franklin D. Roosevelt himself dedicated this preserve of American wilderness. Each trail and overlook tells stories of the people who've called these mountains home.
Weather and SeasonsSummer brings perfect camping weather to this mountain retreat, with temperatures that stay refreshingly cool even when the valleys below swelter. Peak season visitors enjoy warm days ideal for lake swimming and comfortable nights perfect for campfire gatherings. As autumn arrives, the surrounding forests explode in a symphony of reds, golds, and oranges. Winter transforms the landscape into a quieter wonderland, where snow may dust the peaks and frost sparkles on morning meadows. Spring emerges with wildflowers and rushing streams, though visitors should pack rain gear for the occasional mountain shower that keeps these forests so lush and green.
ElevationPerched at 1,800 feet above sea level, the campground exists in that sweet spot where summer heat becomes a distant memory. This elevation gifts campers with naturally air-conditioned nights and morning temperatures that invite you to linger over coffee while wrapped in a cozy fleece. The altitude creates a unique microclimate where mountain laurel blooms later than in the valleys, and where the lake waters stay refreshingly cool even in July—a natural swimming pool carved by ancient geology and fed by mountain springs.
Natural Features and SceneryTwo sapphire gems sparkle at the heart of this mountain sanctuary: the 25-acre Lower Sherando Lake and its smaller sibling, the 7-acre Upper Lake, both cradled between the protective arms of Torry Ridge and the greater Blue Ridge range. Dense hardwood forests cascade down the mountainsides, their canopy so thick that even midday sun filters through in cathedral-like beams. Mountain-fed streams tumble over moss-covered rocks, their constant murmur providing nature's white noise for peaceful sleep. Early risers might spot deer grazing in meadow clearings, while hawks circle overhead, riding thermals that rise from the sun-warmed ridges.
Geological RegionThe Blue Ridge Mountains tell an ancient story written in stone—these are some of the oldest mountains on Earth, their rounded peaks weathered by millions of years of wind and rain. Unlike the sharp, young Rockies, the Blue Ridge wears its age with gentle dignity, creating a landscape of rolling peaks, hidden hollows, and secret valleys. The rugged terrain showcases exposed granite faces and ancient metamorphic rocks, while centuries of fallen leaves have created rich soils that support the dense forests blanketing every slope. Cool mountain springs emerge from hidden aquifers, feeding the lakes that make this campground such a refreshing escape from summer heat.
