About this campground

Nestled deep within the pristine wilderness of Prince William Sound, Goose Bay Cabin stands as a modern sanctuary in one of Alaska's most spectacular settings. This striking A-frame structure, freshly built in 2021, rises from the Nellie Juan - College Fiord Wilderness Study Area like a beacon for adventurers. Whether you're carving fresh tracks through powder snow, paddling crystalline waters in search of marine giants, or casting lines into salmon-rich streams, this well-appointed refuge becomes your gateway to untamed Alaska. Inside, sturdy wooden bunks await weary explorers, while an efficient oil drip stove keeps the chill at bay and rustic benches provide gathering spots for sharing the day's adventures.
Goose Bay Cabin offers a remote and rustic camping experience. It provides accommodations in a public-use cabin without electricity or running water. It is suitable for visitors who are self-sufficient and prepared for the wilderness environment.
Historical SignificanceRising from the remnants of its predecessor like a phoenix from the snow, the current Goose Bay Cabin represents resilience in the face of nature's power. After heavy snows claimed the original structure, this new A-frame emerged in 2021, built stronger and more enduring—a testament to humanity's determination to maintain a foothold in this wild corner of Prince William Sound.
Weather and SeasonsEach season transforms Goose Bay into a different world entirely. Winter blankets the landscape in deep snow, creating a backcountry skier's paradise—though travelers must respect the mountain's power and stay vigilant for avalanche conditions. Summer brings the gentle patter of frequent rain against the cabin roof, with moderate temperatures perfect for long days of exploration. Autumn paints the wilderness in golden hues as hunters pursue their quarry through the changing landscape. Spring awakens the sound with longer days and corn snow conditions that draw backcountry skiing enthusiasts from far and wide.
ElevationThe cabin sits at an elevation where coastal rainforest meets the maritime influence of Prince William Sound, creating a unique microclimate perfect for diverse outdoor pursuits throughout the year.
Natural Features and SceneryStep outside and find yourself immersed in a tapestry of Alaskan wilderness. Ancient Spruce and Hemlock giants tower overhead, their moss-draped branches creating cathedral-like groves. Underfoot, delicate muskeg cushions each step while tall grasses wave in the coastal breeze. Across the bay, evergreen-cloaked slopes frame a silvery waterfall that tumbles toward the sea. This living landscape hosts an incredible cast of wildlife—bald eagles patrol the skies while Sitka black-tailed deer browse the forest edges. Black bears lumber through berry patches, and the waters beyond teem with life as humpback whales breach, orcas hunt in coordinated pods, and playful Dall's porpoises race alongside boats.
Geological RegionGoose Bay Cabin occupies a remarkable position within the Nellie Juan - College Fiord Wilderness Study Area, where Prince William Sound's dramatic fjords carve deep into the Alaskan coastline. This protected landscape showcases the raw power of glacial forces, with the cabin perched amid a delicate ecosystem of spongy muskeg meadows interspersed with wind-swept grasses and stands of mature coastal rainforest. Here, ancient Spruce and Hemlock trees have weathered centuries of storms, creating a living monument to the enduring spirit of Alaska's temperate rainforest.
