Tucked away at Mile 110.4 along the historic C&O Canal Towpath, McCoy's Ferry Campground beckons adventurers seeking an authentic outdoor escape. This intimate riverside retreat features 12 thoughtfully spaced single campsites and one spacious group site, creating the perfect basecamp for paddlers, anglers, and trail enthusiasts. Here, the rhythmic flow of the Potomac sets the soundtrack for days spent casting lines into promising waters, exploring miles of scenic towpath, or launching kayaks into the gentle current.
McCoy's Ferry Campground caters to various camping preferences, from tent camping to small RVs and trailers. It offers both individual and group sites.
Historical SignificanceHistory whispers through the trees at McCoy's Ferry, where centuries of American stories converge. Just steps from your campsite lies Fort Frederick State Park, home to a remarkably preserved stone fortress that stood witness to the French and Indian War. This pre-Revolution stronghold, built when America was still a distant dream, offers campers a unique opportunity to walk through living history while enjoying modern outdoor adventures.
Weather and SeasonsEach season paints McCoy's Ferry in its own distinctive palette, though autumn steals the show with a spectacular display of crimson maples and golden oaks reflecting in the canal waters. Spring through fall visitors enjoy the convenience of on-site potable water (available April 15 through November 1), while the cooler months offer solitude and stark beauty for those prepared for a more rustic experience. The fall foliage season transforms the surrounding hillsides into a photographer's paradise, drawing nature lovers from across the region.
Natural Features and SceneryWestern Maryland's mountain landscape creates a dramatic backdrop for McCoy's Ferry, where forested ridges plunge toward the winding Potomac River below. The campground serves as a natural amphitheater, with towering hardwoods providing shade and shelter while framing postcard-worthy views of the historic canal and river corridor. Morning mists rise from the water to reveal great blue herons stalking the shallows, while sunset paints the mountain silhouettes in shades of purple and gold.
Geological RegionPerched in the heart of Western Maryland's mountain country, McCoy's Ferry occupies a privileged position where the ancient Appalachian ridges meet the life-giving waters of the Potomac River. This unique convergence creates a landscape of remarkable diversity, where the meticulously preserved C&O Canal Towpath winds through a natural corridor shaped by millions of years of geological forces. The surrounding terrain tells the story of time itself, from weathered mountain peaks to the river-carved valley that has served as a transportation route for countless generations.
