About this campground

Nestled within the rugged beauty of Acadia National Park on Maine's dramatic coastline, Blackwoods Campground invites you to wake up beneath towering pines just a 10-minute stroll from the crashing Atlantic waves. This beloved woodland retreat serves as your gateway to endless adventures—from sunrise hikes up granite peaks to peaceful paddles across mirror-like ponds. Here, the scent of salt air mingles with pine needles as you explore historic carriage roads by bike or discover hidden coves along the rocky shore.
Blackwoods Campground offers options for tent, RV, and group camping. The campground is set in a wooded environment and is close to Acadia's natural attractions.
Historical SignificanceYour tent sits on storied ground within one of America's crown jewels—among the first national parks established east of the Mississippi River. Acadia preserves not just pristine wilderness but centuries of human connection to this landscape, from ancient Wabanaki peoples to the visionary philanthropists who helped create this public treasure. Historic stone bridges, carriage roads, and restored buildings throughout the park tell tales of the Gilded Age rusticators who first recognized this coastline's extraordinary beauty.
Weather and SeasonsFrom May through October, Blackwoods welcomes campers into Maine's ever-changing coastal climate. Summer days bring comfortable warmth perfect for exploration, though the Atlantic's influence means you'll want to pack layers—mysterious fog can roll in like a soft gray blanket, transforming familiar landscapes into something magical. Afternoon showers often give way to spectacular sunsets, and the region's frequent mists create an ethereal atmosphere that photographers dream about.
ElevationPerched near sea level where forest meets ocean, Blackwoods offers the unique experience of camping within earshot of both songbirds and surf. This coastal positioning means you're perfectly situated to experience Acadia's dramatic elevation changes—from your campsite at the water's edge to nearby mountain summits offering panoramic ocean views.
Natural Features and SceneryAcadia's diverse tapestry unfolds around you at Blackwoods, where dense spruce and fir forests provide shaded sanctuary for your campsite. Beyond your wooded haven lies a landscape that seems designed to showcase nature's versatility—granite mountains plunge toward the sea, pristine lakes reflect the sky, babbling streams carve through ancient bedrock, and pocket beaches offer treasures with each tide. The park's wetlands teem with life while wildflower meadows burst with seasonal color.
Geological RegionBlackwoods Campground rests on Mount Desert Island, the jewel in Acadia's crown of coastal islands scattered along Maine's Atlantic edge. This remarkable landscape tells a story written in stone—ancient granite sculpted by glaciers, creating the dramatic peaks, U-shaped valleys, and pristine lakes that define the park today. Your wooded campsite places you at the intersection of forest and sea, where the continent meets the ocean in a spectacular display of geological forces that have shaped this coastline for millennia.
