About the campground
The elevation is 5,400 ft. Black Hills National Forest 117 The campground has five loops (Smokey, Rocky, Chipper, Thumper and Woodsey) on the south shore of Sheridan Lake. Ponderosa pine provide ample shade to most campsites. Very few campsites in Smokey Loop have a view of the lake but they have good separation providing good privacy. Woodsey Loop stretches along a spur of land, giving many sites good views of the lake and good privacy between campsites. There are places below this loop, along the water's edge, where boats might be moored. Chipper Loop is compact with only fair privacy from which views of the lake are limited. Thumper Loop is the only loop that has no reserveable campsites and is used for overflow. There are no views of the lake and the campsites have a pleasantly secluded feel. Rocky Loop is furthest from the campground entrance, open year round, and has the campground's only boat ramp with parking. All of the campsites in Rocky Loop have a view of Sheridan Lake and several are on the shoreline. The campsites in Rocky Loop are the most spacious in the campground and privacy is good to excellent. The understory is mainly grass with the sites being spacious and widely spaced. Sheridan Lake permits power boating and is very popular. Things to do are visiting Jewel Cave National Monument, Mt. Rushmore National Memorial, Custer State Park, Scenic Needles Highway, Harney Peak, State Game Loop, Crazy Horse Monument and Wind Cave National Park.
