About this campground

Perched high above the sweeping Summer Lake valley, Fremont Point Cabin offers an extraordinary escape into Oregon's untamed wilderness. This thoughtfully designed retreat, constructed in 2015, combines rustic charm with modern comforts—from the warmth of a crackling wood stove to efficient propane appliances. Wraparound decks on two sides invite you to lose yourself in panoramic vistas while savoring the profound solitude that only a mountaintop hideaway can provide.
Fremont Point Cabin is a unique camping option, offering year-round accommodations in a remote, scenic location. It is designed to provide a rustic yet comfortable experience, catering to those seeking solitude and a connection to nature.
Historical SignificanceRising from the ashes of the devastating 2002 forest fire, today's Fremont Point Cabin stands as a powerful symbol of resilience and community spirit. Through generous donations and countless hours of volunteer labor, locals and nature lovers came together to rebuild this beloved landmark, ensuring future generations could experience the magic of Winter Rim's spectacular heights.
Weather and SeasonsMountain weather here dances between extremes, creating a landscape that transforms with each season. Winter blankets the cabin in snow, turning your arrival into an adventure requiring snowshoes or cross-country skis—a journey that rewards with pristine white vistas and crystalline air. As one guest wisely noted, 'Weather can be unpredictable. Bring layers.' Spring melts away the challenges, while summer opens easy access to this high-altitude sanctuary, though temperatures remain refreshingly cool even on the warmest days.
ElevationAt nearly 3,000 feet above the shimmering expanse of Summer Lake, this lofty perch delivers more than just views—it offers a complete sensory experience. The crisp mountain air feels different here, lighter and cleaner, while temperatures drop noticeably from the valley floor below. Visitors should come prepared for the altitude's gentle effects and the refreshing coolness that persists even during summer months.
Natural Features and SceneryFrom your eagle's nest nearly 3,000 feet above Summer Lake, the world unfolds in layers of natural splendor. The dramatic escarpment drops away to reveal the entire valley stretched out like a living map, while behind you, ancient forests of towering ponderosa and lodgepole pines whisper stories of the wild. Wildlife thrives in this diverse ecosystem where forest meets sky, offering glimpses of deer, elk, and countless bird species that call these heights home.
Geological RegionWinter Rim's dramatic escarpment in North Central Lake County creates one of Oregon's most striking geological features. This ancient uplift, crowned by the cabin at nearly 3,000 feet, showcases the powerful forces that shaped the region's landscape. Below, Summer Lake valley spreads across the horizon, while surrounding slopes support thriving forests of ponderosa and lodgepole pines—a testament to the area's remarkable ecological diversity born from its unique topography.
