Escape to Sailors Haven Cottage, where the rhythm of ocean waves becomes your daily soundtrack. This intimate single-bedroom retreat on Fire Island National Seashore offers a rare opportunity to disconnect from the mainland and immerse yourself in coastal serenity. Perfect for couples or small families of up to 4 guests, the cottage requires a minimum 6-night stay—just enough time to truly unwind and explore the wonders that await. From your doorstep, discover the mystical Sunken Forest, stroll to the lively Cherry Grove community, or launch your adventures from nearby Sailors Haven Marina.
This site offers cabin lodging for small groups of 2-4 visitors, with a focus on providing a secluded and comfortable stay.
Historical SignificanceJust a short walk from your cottage lies Cherry Grove, a legendary community that has shaped Fire Island's unique character for decades. This historic enclave pulses with creative energy, offering eclectic nightlife, artistic expression, and a welcoming atmosphere that has made it a beloved destination for generations. The area's rich cultural tapestry weaves together stories of artists, writers, and free spirits who have found inspiration in these windswept shores.
Weather and SeasonsSummer transforms this barrier island into a sun-soaked paradise where warm days are tempered by refreshing ocean breezes. Peak season brings perfect beach weather with gentle winds and minimal rainfall, creating ideal conditions for swimming, sunbathing, and twilight beach walks. As autumn arrives, the crowds thin and a peaceful tranquility settles over the island. Winter months bring a dramatic change—cold temperatures and wild Atlantic storms showcase nature's raw power, making the cottage a cozy refuge for those seeking solitude and reflection.
Natural Features and SceneryStep outside into a world where nature reveals its most precious secrets. The legendary Sunken Forest—one of only two maritime holly forests on Earth—invites exploration along its boardwalk trails, where ancient trees create a cathedral-like canopy overhead. Your private stretch of Atlantic beach offers endless horizons and pristine sand, while the calm waters of Great South Bay provide a gentle contrast to the ocean's power. As ocean salt-spray cools your skin, watch for the island's enchanting residents: graceful deer emerging at dusk, playful foxes darting through the dunes, ancient turtles making their patient journeys, and countless seabirds painting the sky with their movements.
Geological RegionFire Island National Seashore stands as a remarkable testament to nature's artistry—a slender barrier island shaped by centuries of wind and waves. Here, the extraordinarily rare Sunken Forest thrives in a depression behind the dunes, its maritime holly trees creating an otherworldly ecosystem found in only one other place on the planet. Sandy beaches stretch for miles, offering both Atlantic Ocean drama and the peaceful waters of Great South Bay. This dynamic landscape constantly evolves with the tides and seasons, creating an ever-changing canvas of natural beauty.
