About this campground

Welcome to Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area, where pristine white sand beaches meet crystal-clear waters in an unexpected oasis on the Nebraska plains. This premier camping destination requires advanced reservations and rewards visitors with a choice of accommodations ranging from primitive beachfront sites where you can fall asleep to gentle waves, to basic campsites nestled among the dunes, and modern full hookup sites for those seeking comfort in paradise.
Lake McConaughy SRA offers a variety of camping options, including primitive beach camping, designated group sites, and sites with full electric, water, and sewer hookups.
Historical SignificanceJust beyond the shores of modern-day recreation lies a window into America's pioneering past at nearby Ash Hollow State Historical Park. Here, deeply carved wagon ruts still bear witness to the thousands of emigrants who traversed the Oregon and California Trails, while ancient cave dwellings reveal stories of prehistoric peoples who called this region home thousands of years before. This compelling blend of natural beauty and human history creates a uniquely enriching camping experience.
Weather and SeasonsExperience the dramatic beauty of Nebraska's changing seasons at Lake McConaughy. Summer brings warm, sun-soaked days perfect for beach activities, though Mother Nature occasionally reminds visitors of her power with impressive thunderstorms and winds that sculpt the sand into new patterns. When winter transforms the landscape into a serene wonderland, dedicated crews keep roads clear and accessible, allowing year-round adventurers to discover the lake's quieter, snow-dusted charm.
ElevationNestled within Nebraska's gently rolling landscape, the recreation area offers accessible terrain that welcomes visitors of all abilities to explore its diverse environments.
Natural Features and SceneryDiscover Nebraska's best-kept secret at Lake McConaughy, the state's largest reservoir and a stunning anomaly in the heartland. Visitors are consistently amazed by beaches of fine, sugar-like white sand that rivals any coastal destination, stretching along shorelines of remarkably clear water. Many first-time guests can't help but compare the expansive blue waters to an inland ocean, complete with rolling waves on windy days and endless horizons that blur the line between sky and water.
Geological RegionCarved into the North Platte River Valley, Lake McConaughy emerges as a magnificent testament to both natural forces and human engineering. This massive reservoir, Nebraska's largest, has transformed the surrounding landscape into an unexpected paradise where ancient river channels now cradle beaches of pure white sand and waters so clear you can see your feet in the shallows. The unique geology of the region has created a recreational wonderland that seems almost magical in its contrast to the surrounding Great Plains.
