About this campground

Nestled at the foot of the mighty Mt. Mitchell, Briar Bottom Group Campground offers an authentic mountain retreat where memories are made around crackling campfires. Six spacious group sites wind through a scenic loop, perfect for family reunions, scout troops, or adventure clubs seeking a basecamp in the heart of Pisgah National Forest. While you'll find modern conveniences like flush toilets at each site, the real luxury comes from your proximity to both the wilderness and the neighboring Black Mountain Campground, where hot showers await after a day of exploration.
Briar Bottom is a group tent-only campground that caters to large gatherings of up to 30 people per site. No RV or primitive camping accommodations are available.
Historical SignificanceBriar Bottom isn't just a campground – it's a living legacy tucked within a protected bear sanctuary. For generations, these ancient forests have called to adventurers, creating a tapestry of family traditions that span decades. As one devoted visitor shares: 'My grandad came here as a Boy Scout, my dad came here as a kid, and I've been coming since birth.' This cherished corner of the National Forests in North Carolina continues to weave new stories into its rich history, where each campfire circle becomes a link in an unbroken chain of outdoor memories.
Weather and SeasonsAt 3,040 feet, Briar Bottom dances with the mountain weather's ever-changing moods. Summer days bring warmth and sunshine, but don't be fooled – mountain nights can surprise you with their cool embrace, making that sleeping bag feel extra cozy. The mountains here have their own weather personality, often greeting visitors with afternoon showers that transform the forest into a misty wonderland. As one seasoned camper advises: 'It rains pretty much every day there; make sure to put a tarp under your tent and over your campsite.' Pack layers and rain gear, and you'll be ready for whatever Mother Nature has in store.
ElevationPerched at 3,040 feet above sea level, Briar Bottom offers a refreshing escape from the sweltering lowlands. This high-altitude haven delivers naturally air-conditioned comfort, where the crisp mountain air carries the scent of balsam fir and the promise of cooler temperatures. The elevation creates a unique Appalachian forest ecosystem where morning mists cling to the treetops and evening temperatures invite you to gather closer around the campfire.
Natural Features and SceneryWake up to a symphony of birdsong in this verdant cathedral of towering hardwoods and evergreens. The South Toe River meanders nearby, its gentle murmur providing nature's soundtrack to your mountain adventure. Above it all, Mt. Mitchell – the crown jewel of the Eastern United States – presides over the landscape, its 6,684-foot summit piercing the sky as the highest peak east of the Mississippi. The surrounding Appalachian forests burst with life, from delicate wildflowers carpeting the forest floor to black bears foraging for berries in the understory. Every trail promises discovery, every sunrise paints the mountains in new colors.
Geological RegionBriar Bottom sits in the geological wonderland of Pisgah National Forest, where ancient Appalachian peaks tell stories written in stone over millions of years. These time-worn mountains, once rivals to the Himalayas in height, now offer gentle slopes clothed in some of the most biodiverse forests in North America. The South Toe River has carved its patient path through the landscape, creating the valley that cradles your campsite. Here, at the base of Mt. Mitchell, you're camping atop some of the oldest exposed rock on Earth, surrounded by the lush temperate rainforest that makes this corner of the Appalachians a true ecological treasure.
