About this campground

Perched high above the Seeley Valley, the Double Arrow Lookout stands as a sentinel of history and adventure, offering visitors an extraordinary opportunity to sleep where forest fire watchers once kept their vigilant watch. This beautifully preserved 1933 lookout tower has been transformed into a unique mountain retreat, complete with modern comforts like electricity, heat, a fully equipped kitchen, and refrigerator. From your elevated perch, panoramic views of the Swan Mountains unfold in every direction, creating an unforgettable backdrop for your stay. As one enchanted visitor shared, this remarkable destination strikes the perfect balance of being 'out of the way but not too far,' while families have discovered it to be an 'awesome place' for creating lasting memories together.
Double Arrow Lookout is a unique, historic structure offering cabin-style accommodations atop a 20-foot tower. It is listed on the National Historic Lookout Register. Primitive camping and sleeping in the surrounding area are prohibited, ensuring exclusivity and privacy for guests staying within the lookout.
Historical SignificanceStep back in time at this remarkable piece of Forest Service heritage, proudly listed on the National Historic Lookout Register. Built in 1933 during the golden age of fire lookout construction, Double Arrow served as a critical early warning post for wildfires, with dedicated Forest Service personnel manning the tower through changing seasons and weather until the mid-1980s. Today, this lovingly maintained structure invites you to experience a unique chapter of American conservation history, where you can imagine the solitary life of fire watchers who once called this sky-high perch home.
Weather and SeasonsSummer brings ideal conditions to the lookout, with warm, dry days perfect for hiking and wildlife watching during the peak visitation season. The crisp mountain air and moderate temperatures create comfortable conditions for outdoor adventures and stargazing from your tower perch. As winter arrives, the landscape transforms into a snow-covered wonderland, though visitors should come prepared for freezing temperatures and winter driving conditions. The dry climate means spectacular visibility on most days, allowing for stunning views that stretch for miles across the valley below.
ElevationRising dramatically above the valley floor, the lookout's lofty position provides the breathtaking vantage point that made it perfect for its original fire-spotting purpose and now offers visitors an unparalleled mountain experience.
Natural Features and SceneryFrom your hillside aerie, the majestic Swan Mountains dominate the horizon while the Seeley Valley stretches below in a tapestry of forests and meadows. This remarkable ecosystem serves as home to some of North America's most iconic wildlife—mountain goats traverse the rocky cliffs, elk graze in distant meadows, and if you're fortunate, you might spot a grizzly bear foraging in the valley below. Keep your binoculars handy for glimpses of soaring bald eagles and the rare sight of trumpeter swans gliding across hidden mountain lakes. The ever-changing play of light across the peaks and valleys creates a natural theater that captivates from sunrise to sunset.
Geological RegionNestled within the magnificent Lolo National Forest, the lookout occupies a strategic position where the Seeley Valley meets the dramatic Swan Mountains. This stunning geological crossroads showcases the best of Montana's alpine wilderness—from craggy cliff faces and ancient rock formations to dense coniferous forests that blanket the mountainsides. The surrounding landscape tells a story millions of years in the making, where glacial forces carved deep valleys and sculpted the peaks that now frame your unforgettable mountain escape.
