About this campground

Perched high above the clouds at 5,988 feet, Webb Mountain Lookout beckons adventurers seeking an extraordinary escape into Montana's wilderness. This historic fire lookout, crafted in 1959, transforms your camping experience into something magical—imagine waking up in a rustic mountain cabin where eagles soar at eye level and the vast Koocanusa Reservoir stretches endlessly below. Complete with a warming wood stove and wraparound catwalk, this elevated sanctuary offers 360-degree views of the Northern Rockies, including the majestic Mount Henry rising from the forest tapestry.
Webb Mountain Lookout provides a unique cabin rental experience in a remote and scenic setting.
Historical SignificanceFor over four decades, this stalwart sentinel stood watch over Kootenai National Forest, its vigilant fire spotters protecting millions of acres of pristine wilderness. Built in 1959 when forest protection meant lonely vigils and keen eyes scanning for smoke plumes, Webb Mountain Lookout embodies the romantic era of backcountry fire detection. Today, this piece of U.S. Forest Service heritage invites you to step into history, experiencing the solitude and purpose that defined generations of fire lookouts who called this sky-high outpost home.
Weather and SeasonsSummer unveils Webb Mountain at its finest, with crystalline skies and gentle mountain breezes creating perfect conditions for your high-altitude retreat. Days typically warm to a comfortable 50°F, ideal for catwalk contemplation and forest exploration, while evenings cool to a crisp 30°F—perfect for cozying up beside the wood stove with hot cocoa in hand. The mountaintop's reliable dry conditions and generally calm winds make it an inviting destination, though occasional gusts remind you of your lofty perch among the peaks.
ElevationAt nearly 6,000 feet above sea level, Webb Mountain Lookout places you in Montana's alpine realm where the air grows thin and views stretch forever. This dramatic elevation delivers a natural air conditioning system, offering refreshing relief from valley heat while treating you to a front-row seat for nature's grandest performances—from rolling cloud formations at your doorstep to hawks riding thermal currents far below your feet.
Natural Features and SceneryImmerse yourself in a landscape where towering evergreens give way to sweeping vistas of the Koocanusa Reservoir's sapphire waters and Mount Henry's commanding presence. From your eagle's nest perspective, watch as morning mist dances through valleys while golden sunlight ignites distant peaks. As darkness falls, the lookout transforms into an astronomical observatory where the Milky Way blazes overhead, undiminished by city lights. This pristine wilderness setting offers intimate encounters with nature—from curious deer wandering nearby meadows to the haunting calls of owls echoing through moonlit forests.
Geological RegionWebb Mountain rises as a prominent sentinel within the vast Kootenai National Forest, its 5,988-foot summit crowned by your historic lookout home. This geological marvel sits amid a sea of mixed evergreen forests that cascade down mountainsides toward the engineered wonder of Koocanusa Reservoir. The surrounding landscape tells ancient stories through its rugged peaks and verdant valleys, creating a dramatic backdrop where the forces of nature and human ingenuity converge in Northwestern Montana's untamed wilderness.
