About this campground
Step back in time at Kings Hill Cabin, where the weathered logs tell stories of the 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps craftsmen who built this mountain retreat. Nestled deep in the lodgepole pines, this historic hideaway seamlessly blends rustic charm with modern conveniences—think cozy electric heat meeting hand-hewn timber walls. Whether you're carving fresh tracks through powder on cross-country skis, exploring miles of summer hiking trails, or listening to the evening chorus of mountain birds from the cabin porch, Kings Hill serves as your basecamp for year-round adventure. The simple kitchen lets you prepare hearty meals after days spent exploring OHV trails or snowmobile routes that wind through the surrounding wilderness.
Kings Hill Cabin provides a rustic cabin accommodation suitable for families and small groups. It allows up to six guests inside and accommodates one camper or RV outside for a maximum of 10 people. It offers basic amenities and no modern bathroom facilities.
Historical SignificanceKings Hill Cabin stands as a living monument to American resilience and conservation. Built by young men of the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, every hand-hewn log and carefully fitted stone represents hope during hard times. These CCC workers, part of Franklin Roosevelt's ambitious New Deal program, transformed unemployment into lasting legacy, creating recreational treasures across America's public lands. Today, staying here means sleeping within walls that helped heal both a wounded landscape and a struggling nation.
Weather and SeasonsFour distinct seasons transform Kings Hill into an ever-changing wonderland. Winter blankets the cabin in deep snow, creating a pristine playground for snowmobilers and Nordic skiers who relish the crisp mountain air and endless white horizons. Spring arrives with wildflower blooms and muddy trails as the forest awakens. Summer brings warm days perfect for hiking and OHV adventures, though evenings remain refreshingly cool at this elevation. Fall paints the surrounding peaks in golden aspens before the first snows signal the return of winter's quiet magic.
ElevationPerched at 7,600 feet where the air grows thin and the views stretch forever, Kings Hill Cabin offers a true high-country experience. At this elevation, summer afternoons rarely grow uncomfortably warm, while winter storms can drop several feet of powder overnight. The altitude means brilliant star-filled nights, dramatic weather changes, and that satisfying shortness of breath that reminds you you're truly in the mountains. Visitors should prepare for the elevation's effects and pack layers for rapidly changing conditions.
Natural Features and SceneryHidden just 100 yards from the highway yet feeling worlds away, Kings Hill Cabin occupies a secret pocket of wilderness where towering lodgepole pines filter the mountain light into dancing patterns. To the north, Belt Creek tumbles over ancient stones, its constant murmur providing nature's soundtrack. Sheep Creek mirrors this melody to the south, creating a natural amphitheater of water music. The surrounding forest opens occasionally to reveal distant peaks and hidden meadows, while the immediate woods shelter deer, elk, and countless bird species that make this elevation their home.
Geological RegionThe cabin rests in the heart of Montana's Belt Mountains, where ancient geological forces created today's dramatic landscape. At 7,600 feet near Kings Hill Pass, you're standing on the remnants of prehistoric ocean floors thrust skyward over millions of years. The lodgepole pine forest thrives in this challenging environment, their straight trunks reaching toward mountain skies. Belt Creek and Sheep Creek have carved their valleys through layers of limestone and shale, creating the rugged topography that makes this region a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts seeking authentic mountain experiences far from crowded tourist corridors.
