This National Historic Register gem sits just miles from the Canadian border, offering an authentic wilderness experience where rustic charm meets modern adventure. Whether you're casting a line in crystal-clear waters, tracking wildlife through ancient forests, gliding across snowy landscapes on cross-country skis, or using it as your basecamp for exploring the wonders of Glacier National Park, this historic cabin provides the perfect blend of heritage and outdoor recreation.

Historical SignificanceMore than a century ago, in 1913, Frank and Ella Wurtz carved out their piece of paradise in this remote corner of Montana, building what would become a treasured landmark. Their hand-hewn log cabin has weathered generations of Montana seasons, earning its rightful place on the National Historic Register. Through the dedication of passionate volunteers who helped restore this architectural treasure, the Wurtz legacy lives on, allowing modern adventurers to connect with the pioneering spirit that shaped the American West.
Weather and SeasonsExperience the cabin's magic throughout all four seasons, each offering its own unique character. While accessible year-round, winter visitors should come prepared for true Montana conditions – the North Fork Road receives intermittent plowing during snowy months, making chains and four-wheel drive essential companions for your journey. This seasonal challenge only adds to the authentic frontier experience that awaits.
ElevationNestled in the Montana wilderness at an elevation that provides comfortable mountain living while remaining accessible to outdoor enthusiasts of all abilities.
Natural Features and SceneryWake to breathtaking vistas where towering conifers create a natural cathedral behind the cabin, their ancient branches whispering stories of the wilderness. The front of the property opens to an inviting grassy meadow dotted with stately pines, perfectly framing dramatic views of Glacier National Park's majestic Livingston Range. This stunning tableau changes with the light, painting the mountains in alpenglow at sunrise and sunset, while the nearby North Fork of the Flathead River provides a constant soundtrack of flowing water.
Geological RegionPositioned in the remarkable landscape where the North Fork of the Flathead River carves its path through primeval forests, Wurtz Cabin occupies a unique geological setting. The property showcases Montana's diverse ecosystems – from the dense coniferous forests that shelter the cabin's northern exposure to the open meadowlands that slope toward the river valley. This prime location offers unparalleled views of the Livingston Range, where ancient geological forces have sculpted some of Glacier National Park's most spectacular peaks, creating a dramatic backdrop that has inspired visitors for over a century.
