About this campground

Escape to Mill Creek Cabin, a charming 20-by-14 log retreat nestled in the heart of the Absaroka Mountains. This rustic sanctuary, crafted from sturdy logs in 1927, invites you to disconnect from modern life and immerse yourself in Wyoming's pristine wilderness. Whether you're casting a line into crystal-clear waters, exploring mountain trails on foot or horseback, or gliding through snow-covered meadows on cross-country skis, this historic cabin serves as your cozy basecamp for year-round adventure.
Mill Creek Cabin offers primarily cabin-style lodging catering to individual or small group stays. "It accommodates up to four people." Seasonal water availability and equestrian facilities make it versatile.
Historical SignificanceStep back in time to 1927, when Forest Service personnel first pushed open the heavy wooden door of Mill Creek Cabin. Built during an era of expanding conservation consciousness, this sturdy log structure served as a remote outpost for rangers protecting America's emerging wilderness heritage. Today, the cabin stands as a living testament to early conservation efforts, its weathered logs holding stories of countless seasons and the dedicated individuals who helped preserve these wild lands for future generations.
Weather and SeasonsExperience the dramatic seasonal transformation of the Absaroka wilderness from your cabin doorstep. Summer brings warm days perfect for fly fishing in Mill Creek's rushing waters and exploring wildflower-dotted trails on horseback. As autumn paints the mountains in gold and crimson, crisp air signals the approaching winter wonderland. When snow blankets the landscape, the cabin becomes a haven for winter enthusiasts, with endless opportunities for snowmobiling through powder-filled meadows, skiing beneath towering pines, and snowshoeing under star-filled skies. Pack warm layers and embrace the mountain's refreshing chill.
ElevationPerched at 5,750 feet above sea level, Mill Creek Cabin offers a refreshing mountain atmosphere where the air feels crisp and clean in your lungs. This elevated setting rewards visitors with sweeping vistas of surrounding peaks and valleys while creating an alpine environment where summer temperatures remain pleasantly cool and winter transforms the landscape into a snow-globe paradise.
Natural Features and SceneryDiscover your own private paradise at 5,750 feet, where Mill Creek Cabin sits like a jewel in an emerald meadow framed by towering evergreen sentinels. Just steps from your door, Mill Creek tumbles and dances its way toward the mighty Yellowstone River, its melodic waters providing a constant soundtrack to your mountain retreat. Morning mist often reveals grazing deer and majestic elk, while black bears forage in distant berry patches. Look skyward to spot bald eagles soaring on thermal currents and mountain bluebirds flashing brilliant azure as they dart between ancient pines.
Geological RegionWelcome to the spectacular Absaroka Mountains, where Mill Creek Cabin awaits within the renowned Yellowstone Ranger District. This geological wonderland showcases nature's artistry through rolling meadows carpeted with wildflowers, dense evergreen forests that whisper ancient secrets, and the pristine waters of Mill Creek connecting you to the greater Yellowstone ecosystem.
