About this campground
Nestled deep in the southern Bitterroot Mountains, Twogood Cabin beckons adventurers seeking an authentic wilderness escape. This remote haven, accessible only by a scenic 6-mile trail, rewards those who make the journey with unparalleled solitude and pristine mountain beauty. Whether you're casting a line in crystal-clear waters, traversing alpine trails on horseback, or gliding through powder-laden forests on cross-country skis, the cabin serves as your gateway to year-round outdoor adventures. Here, the modern world fades away, replaced by the gentle sounds of Porcupine Creek and the whisper of wind through ancient pines.
Twogood Cabin offers cabin-style accommodation in a secluded forest area. The rustic setting appeals to campers looking for a quiet getaway.
Historical SignificanceStep through the weathered doorway of Twogood Cabin and you're entering a piece of living history. Crafted by the skilled hands of Harry Twogood and Clifford Wetzsteon in 1952, this sturdy structure served as a vital range camp for nearly three decades, sheltering cowboys and forest workers who tended these wild lands. The cabin's hewn logs and time-worn floors whisper stories of long days in the saddle and evenings spent around the wood stove. When it opened to public recreation, this historic refuge began a new chapter, allowing modern adventurers to experience the authentic mountain lifestyle of Montana's ranching heritage.
Weather and SeasonsEach season transforms Twogood Cabin into a distinct wilderness playground. Summer arrives with gentle warmth and crystal-clear days, creating perfect conditions for hiking and exploration. As autumn paints the mountainsides in gold and crimson, crisp air and reliable sunshine make for ideal outdoor adventures. Winter blankets the landscape in pristine snow, turning the surrounding forests into a wonderland for skiing and snowshoeing enthusiasts. Throughout the year, visitors can expect predominantly clear skies and moderate winds, with the area's unique microclimate often delivering those perfect bluebird days that make mountain memories.
ElevationPerched at 5,600 feet above sea level, Twogood Cabin occupies that sweet spot where mountain magic happens. At this elevation, the air carries a refreshing crispness even on summer days, while towering conifers create a natural cathedral of green. The altitude provides a perfect escape from valley heat, offering temperatures that remain comfortable for hiking and exploration throughout the warmer months. This mountain setting creates an ideal habitat for diverse wildlife and wildflowers, while offering visitors that invigorating thin-air experience that makes every breath feel like pure refreshment.
Natural Features and SceneryThe landscape surrounding Twogood Cabin reads like a naturalist's dream journal. Porcupine Creek babbles past the cabin door, its clear waters providing both a soothing soundtrack and excellent fishing opportunities. Ancient forests give way to rolling meadows that transform with the seasons—wildflower-strewn in summer and serving as critical winter range for majestic elk herds. This remarkable ecosystem supports an impressive cast of wildlife characters: from the delicate steps of mule and whitetail deer to the powerful presence of elk, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats navigating rocky outcrops. Lucky visitors might glimpse a black bear foraging for berries, catch sight of a mountain lion's tracks in fresh snow, or hear the haunting call of a bull moose echoing across the valley. Every window frames a masterpiece of untamed Montana wilderness.
Geological RegionTwogood Cabin claims its place in the heart of the southern Bitterroot Mountains, where ancient geological forces have sculpted a landscape of remarkable diversity. At 5,600 feet, the cabin sits perfectly positioned where dense coniferous forests meet open meadowlands, creating those magical edge habitats where wildlife thrives. The reliable flow of Porcupine Creek has carved its own story through the terrain, creating riparian corridors lined with lush vegetation. This dynamic landscape offers endless exploration opportunities, from following game trails through old-growth forests to discovering hidden meadows where time seems to stand still. The varied topography ensures that whether you're seeking challenging terrain or gentle rambles, the Bitterroot's geological tapestry provides the perfect backdrop for your mountain adventure.
