About this campground
Step back in time at the Magruder Rangers House, a lovingly preserved 1930s cabin where Forest Service history comes alive in the heart of the Bitterroot National Forest. This charming two-story retreat features five authentically furnished rooms and serves as your gateway to an incredible 3.5 million acres of combined wilderness. Whether you're casting a line in pristine waters, tracking elk through ancient forests, or simply soaking in the profound silence of the backcountry, this historic cabin offers the perfect blend of rustic charm and modern comfort for your wilderness adventure.
The Magruder Rangers House offers a unique rustic cabin experience, combining historical charm with modern conveniences during peak season. Camping options are limited to cabin stays, as tent, RV, or primitive camping sites are not provided.
Historical SignificanceThe walls of Magruder Rangers House echo with nearly a century of Forest Service legacy. Constructed during the 1930s as part of the historic Deep Creek Ranger Station compound, this cabin once sheltered the hardy rangers and trail crews who protected and maintained these vast wilderness areas. Today, visitors can walk the same wooden floors, warm themselves by the same hearth, and gaze through the same windows that generations of forest guardians called home. The cabin stands as a living monument to the dedication and frontier spirit that helped preserve America's wild places.
Weather and SeasonsEach season paints a different masterpiece at Magruder Rangers House. Summer arrives with wildflower meadows and warm days perfect for exploration, while autumn transforms the landscape into a golden tapestry of changing aspens and crisp mountain air. The peak visiting season from June through October offers the most accessible conditions and mild temperatures. As winter approaches, the cabin becomes a snow-draped sanctuary where temperatures plunge below freezing and deep powder blankets the forest. Road access becomes challenging or impossible during heavy snow months, creating an authentic backcountry experience for the truly adventurous.
ElevationPerched at 4,000 feet where the mountain air stays refreshingly cool even in summer's peak, Magruder Rangers House offers the perfect elevation for comfortable wilderness living. This moderate altitude provides relief from valley heat while remaining low enough to avoid the harsh conditions of higher peaks. The result is a sweet spot where morning mists drift through towering pines, afternoon breezes carry the scent of wildflowers, and evening temperatures invite cozy gatherings around the fireplace.
Natural Features and SceneryImagine waking to the gentle murmur of the Selway River, its crystal waters winding through a landscape that seems untouched by time. The cabin sits at the edge of vast coniferous forests that open into sun-drenched meadows where elk graze at dawn. This is the domain of mountain lions padding silently through the underbrush, wolves howling under star-filled skies, and black bears foraging among huckleberry patches. Moose wade through marshy hollows while eagles soar overhead, all set against the backdrop of endless wilderness vistas that stretch to the horizon. The historic cabin's weathered logs and vintage character add a human touch to this wild tapestry.
Geological RegionMagruder Rangers House occupies a remarkable position along the legendary Selway River, perfectly positioned between two of America's most spectacular wilderness areas. To one side stretches the 1.2-million-acre Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, while the other direction leads to the massive 2.3-million-acre Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. This unique location places you in a geological wonderland of ancient mountains carved by glaciers, deep river canyons, and expansive coniferous forests broken by alpine meadows. The rugged terrain tells the story of millions of years of geological forces, creating a landscape of dramatic peaks, hidden valleys, and pristine waterways that define the character of the Northern Rockies.
