Best Time to Camp at Special Use Campground

Fall delivers the best conditions: October highs in the 50s–60s°F, nights dipping into the 30s–40s°F, and hardwoods ablaze with color. Humidity drops, biting insects disappear, and long-distance views sharpen under dry skies. Summer heat can hit 113°F on exposed trail sections, turning ridge hikes into endurance tests. Visit after rain if you want to see Mina Sauk Falls at full flow. Dry stretches leave the cascade disappointing.

    About Special Use Campground

Special Use Campground sits within Taum Sauk Mountain State Park's 7,500 acres in the St. Francois Mountains, where rocky glades and wooded terrain climb to Missouri's highest point at 1,540 feet. The roughly 12 basic sites serve as a quiet base camp for hikers tackling the park's trail network, including a section of the Ozark Trail. Fall weekends see the most use, but weekdays often stay empty.
