About this campground
Perched high in the alpine wilderness, Lake Cleveland East Side beckons adventurers with its pristine mountain waters and breathtaking vistas. This beloved summer retreat offers 17 thoughtfully positioned campsites—7 available for reservation and 10 welcoming spontaneous explorers on a first-come, first-served basis. Whether you arrive with a large RV or trailer, you'll find spacious sites perfectly suited for your basecamp as you explore the crystalline lake waters by kayak, cast a line for mountain trout, or set out on scenic hiking trails that wind through wildflower meadows.
The campground supports a variety of camping styles, including RV, tent, and group camping areas. The East Side loop is better equipped for RVs and trailers, while the West Side is less accessible for large vehicles.
Historical SignificanceJust two miles from the summit of Mt. Harrison stands a piece of living history—a still-operational fire lookout tower that has watched over these peaks for decades. Modern adventurers can also explore the nearby Pomerelle ski area, which transforms from winter wonderland to summer playground, offering lift-served access to spectacular hiking and mountain biking trails that cascade down the mountainside.
Weather and SeasonsSummer arrives late at this high-altitude haven, with the campground typically opening its gates in mid-July as winter's lingering snowdrifts finally surrender to the warming sun. Through September, visitors enjoy the fleeting mountain summer, though wise campers come prepared for nature's whims—afternoon thunderstorms can roll in quickly, temperatures can plummet after sunset, and the high country's weather writes its own rules.
ElevationAt 8,300 feet above sea level, Lake Cleveland East Side exists in that magical realm where the air grows thin and crisp, where summer temperatures remain refreshingly cool even on the warmest days, and where the night sky seems close enough to touch. This lofty perch offers a true alpine camping experience, complete with cool mornings, afternoon breezes, and the kind of star-filled nights that make you forget the world below.
Natural Features and SceneryNestled in a pristine alpine basin beneath the watchful gaze of Mt. Harrison's 9,240-foot summit, the campground rests at nature's edge where hardy conifers give way to expansive meadows painted with seasonal wildflowers. From this remarkable vantage point, the vast Snake River Plain stretches endlessly below, while on clear days, your gaze can travel across state lines to the distant mountains of Utah and Nevada—a panoramic theater of the American West that transforms with each passing hour as light and shadow play across the landscape.
Geological RegionLocated in an alpine lake basin below Mt. Harrison at 9,240 feet, near the timberline and alpine wildflower meadows. Expansive views of the Snake River Plain and Utah/Nevada.
