About this campground

Escape to Baumgartner Campground, where natural hot springs meet pristine wilderness camping. This beloved retreat offers accommodations for every group size, from intimate single-family sites to spacious quad configurations and large group areas. Each thoughtfully designed site features essential amenities including picnic tables, fire rings for evening gatherings, utility tables for meal prep, and convenient paved parking spurs (with the charming exception of Site 100, which maintains a more rustic appeal). Modern vault toilets and seasonal drinking water ensure comfort during your stay. The crown jewel of Baumgartner is its legendary hot springs—a soothing concrete soaking pool where 101-degree mineral water provides the perfect end to adventurous days. This natural wonder is lovingly maintained with fresh water daily, creating an authentic yet accessible hot springs experience.
Baumgartner Campground offers a range of camping options, including single, double, quad, and group sites.
Historical SignificanceStep back in time at Baumgartner Campground, where history whispers through the pines. Pay your respects at the John Baumgartner Gravesite, a poignant reminder of the pioneers who first recognized the magic of this mountain sanctuary. Discover the area's rich heritage along a quarter-mile interpretive trail that begins at the hot springs, weaving tales of early settlers, indigenous peoples, and the natural forces that shaped this remarkable landscape. Each step reveals how human history and natural wonder have intertwined for generations.
Weather and SeasonsExperience the rhythm of mountain seasons at Baumgartner, where warm summer days invite endless outdoor adventures and cool evenings call for campfire stories. As autumn arrives, the forest transforms into a golden tapestry before winter blankets the landscape in snow. While freezing temperatures and snowfall make winter camping a challenge for the hardy few, the transformation creates a magical wonderland for those who venture forth. Spring brings renewal as wildflowers emerge and the forest awakens from its winter slumber.
ElevationPerched at 5,200 feet where the air is crisp and clear, Baumgartner Campground offers a refreshing mountain retreat. This elevation gifts visitors with delightfully cool summer temperatures—a welcome respite from valley heat. The thinner air adds an invigorating quality to every breath, though newcomers to altitude should pace themselves as they explore. The elevation creates perfect conditions for stargazing, with crystal-clear night skies revealing constellations in stunning detail.
Natural Features and SceneryImmerse yourself in the cathedral-like grandeur of Baumgartner, where ancient ponderosa pines stretch skyward, their vanilla-scented bark telling stories of centuries past. The campground hugs the banks of the South Fork Boise River, whose melodic waters provide a constant soundtrack to your mountain escape. This pristine ecosystem serves as a wildlife corridor where lucky visitors might glimpse graceful deer browsing at dawn, majestic moose wading through riverside willows, or playful river otters frolicking in the current. The interplay of forest, river, and meadow creates ever-changing vistas that capture the wild heart of Idaho's mountain country.
Geological RegionBaumgartner Campground claims its place within the magnificent Sawtooth National Forest, a geological wonderland where volcanic history meets glacial artistry. Cradled at 5,200 feet elevation along the South Fork Boise River, the campground showcases the dramatic beauty of Idaho's central mountains. Towering ponderosa pines thrive in ancient soils, while the surrounding peaks tell stories of tectonic forces and erosion that sculpted this remarkable landscape. The area serves as a living classroom for geology enthusiasts and a stunning backdrop for outdoor adventures, where every vista reveals the powerful forces that shaped the Sawtooth region over millions of years.
