About this campground

Discover the Pacific Northwest's oldest state park, where three distinct campgrounds offer your perfect basecamp for adventure. Choose from Hawley's Landing's lakeside sites with 10 tent spots and 42 full hookups, the woodland serenity of Chatcolet's 38 tent sites, or Benewah's balanced offering of 24 tent sites and 15 hookup spots. Each campground weaves together over a century of outdoor heritage with modern comfort, creating an unforgettable escape where history meets wilderness.
Heyburn State Park has varied camping options, including tent sites, RV spots with hookups, group camping, and rental cottages or cabins.
Historical SignificanceStep into living history at this 1908 treasure, the crown jewel of Pacific Northwest state parks. Wander past sturdy stone shelters and rustic log structures crafted by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, their weathered timbers telling stories of America's great outdoor legacy. These Depression-era craftsmen left their mark in every carefully placed stone and hand-hewn beam, creating gathering places that have welcomed generations of adventurers.
Weather and SeasonsExperience four distinct seasons that transform this landscape throughout the year. Summer brings warm, sun-drenched days perfect for water activities, with temperatures climbing to a comfortable 87°F. Winter wraps the park in a quiet beauty, though temperatures dip to around 26°F, creating frost-kissed mornings and cozy campfire evenings. Pack your bug spray during warmer months—the local mosquitoes are as persistent as the memories you'll make here.
ElevationNestled at a comfortable elevation that offers gentle terrain for all skill levels, the park provides easy access to both lakeside adventures and forest exploration.
Natural Features and SceneryStand beneath towering Ponderosa Pines that have watched over these lands for four centuries, their vanilla-scented bark and cathedral-like canopy creating nature's own sanctuary. Crystal-clear lakes mirror the sky while hidden marshes teem with life, from great blue herons stalking the shallows to eagles soaring overhead. This birdwatcher's paradise reveals new wonders with each visit—whether it's the haunting call of loons at dawn or the splash of osprey diving for dinner.
Geological RegionCarved by ancient forces in the heart of the Pacific Northwest, Heyburn State Park showcases the region's diverse ecosystems where mountain forests meet pristine waterways. The landscape tells a geological story millions of years in the making, where Ponderosa Pine forests thrive alongside tranquil lakes and vibrant marshlands. Historic CCC structures dot this natural canvas, creating a unique blend of human craftsmanship and untamed wilderness that defines the character of America's oldest state park in the Pacific Northwest.
