About this campground

Perched 30 feet above the forest floor on a historic fire tower, Surveyors Lookout offers adventurous souls a chance to sleep among the clouds. This restored fire lookout cabin delivers sweeping 360-degree vistas of Snow Peak and the surrounding mountain wilderness, where solitude reigns supreme. By day, explore miles of pristine hiking trails or cast a line in crystal-clear mountain streams. By night, watch the stars emerge from your private observatory in the sky.
Surveyors Lookout offers a unique camping option with its historic fire lookout cabin. Camping options are limited to the cabin setup, with no RV or tent-specific sites listed.
Historical SignificanceStep back in time to 1931, when brave fire spotters first climbed this tower to protect vast wilderness areas from wildfire. The original pole structure served faithfully until 1964, when it was rebuilt with sturdy timber that stands strong today. Now proudly listed on the National Historic Register for Lookouts, this piece of living history invites you to become part of its story—spending nights where generations of fire watchers once kept their vigilant watch over the forest below.
Weather and SeasonsThe high-altitude climate brings crisp, dry days perfect for outdoor adventures, with temperatures that remind you you're truly in mountain country. As winter approaches, the landscape transforms into a snow-dusted wonderland, with temperatures dipping to a brisk 15°F on frosty mornings and climbing to around 29°F by afternoon. Winter visitors can expect approximately 3.8 inches of fresh powder during peak snow weeks, creating a magical alpine atmosphere that few get to experience.
ElevationAt 6,000 feet above sea level, this lofty perch places you literally above it all. The thin mountain air brings refreshingly cool nights that invite cozy evenings inside the cabin, while daybreak rewards early risers with sunrise views that stretch for miles. From this elevation, you'll gain a bird's-eye perspective of the wilderness that few ever experience, making every moment feel like you're on top of the world.
Natural Features and SceneryYour home in the sky sits majestically atop Surveyors Ridge, commanding breathtaking views of the untamed Mallard-Larkins Pioneer Area. From your tower windows, watch golden light dance across Snow Peak, Middle Sister, and the distant Mallard Peak Lookout. In late summer, wild huckleberries carpet the surrounding slopes, attracting black bears and other wildlife to nature's feast. Eagles soar at eye level, while elk and deer move through the meadows below, creating an ever-changing tableau of wilderness life.
Geological RegionRising from the rugged backbone of Surveyors Ridge in the Idaho Panhandle National Forests, this lookout stands sentinel over an ancient landscape carved by time and water. The tower overlooks the dramatic Mallard-Larkins Pioneer Area, where the mountain divide separates the tumbling waters of the Little North Fork Clearwater River basin from its larger sibling, the North Fork Clearwater River. This geological crossroads creates a diverse ecosystem where three historic lookouts—Snow Peak, Middle Sister, and Mallard Peak—stand as silent guardians over one of Idaho's last great wilderness frontiers.
