About this campground
Nestled within 850 acres of pristine wilderness, Dworshak State Park unfolds as a tapestry of towering pines and fragrant cedars, sun-dappled meadows, and sparkling waterfront vistas along the serpentine 54-mile reservoir. Here, adventurers find their perfect basecamp for fishing pristine waters, hiking forest trails, diving into refreshing swimming holes, and settling into scenic campsites. Whether you're drawn to test your archery skills, launch your boat into crystal-clear waters, or simply breathe in the mountain air, this outdoor playground delivers experiences that linger long after you've returned home.
Dworshak State Park features a variety of camping options, including tent and RV sites, group camping facilities, and cabin lodging. Basic tent sites are prevalent, while RV sites offer water and electricity hookups. Group facilities include the Three Meadows and Big Eddy Lodge.
Historical SignificanceStand in the shadow of engineering marvel—the nearby Dworshak Dam rises as North America's tallest straight axis concrete gravity dam, a testament to human ambition carved into the landscape. This remarkable structure not only shapes the reservoir but sustains life through its hatcheries, where millions of steelhead and Chinook salmon begin their epic journeys. Just beyond, the thundering cascade of Elk Creek Falls has drawn visitors for generations, its misty spray and rainbow-kissed rocks creating one of the region's most photographed natural wonders.
Weather and SeasonsExperience nature's full spectrum as the seasons paint Dworshak in ever-changing hues. Summer transforms the park into a sun-soaked paradise where temperatures climb to a toasty 93°F, perfect for lakeside lounging and evening campfires. As autumn arrives, the forest erupts in golden splendor before winter wraps the landscape in a crystalline blanket, with temperatures dipping to a crisp 25°F—ideal for those who find magic in frosty mornings and snow-dusted pines. Spring emerges with dramatic flair, mixing sunshine and showers as wildflowers push through the warming earth.
ElevationThe journey to Dworshak becomes part of the adventure as you ascend through high elevation terrain, where steep access roads wind like ribbons through the mountainside. Each tight switchback reveals new vistas while testing your vehicle's mettle, building anticipation for the wilderness sanctuary that awaits at journey's end. These mountain roads remind visitors they're entering a place where nature still reigns supreme.
Natural Features and SceneryImmerse yourself in a landscape where ancient pines, firs, and cedars stretch skyward, their canopy filtering sunlight into cathedral-like beams. Wildflower meadows burst with seasonal color, while the shimmering expanse of Dworshak Reservoir reflects endless skies and forested shores. Hidden trails wind through this natural wonderland, leading to secret berry patches where wild huckleberries and blackberries await patient foragers. Every vista tells a story—from mist rising off morning waters to eagles soaring above timbered ridges.
Geological RegionCarved by time and transformed by the mighty Dworshak Dam, this remarkable landscape showcases nature's collaboration with human engineering. The 54-mile reservoir winds through a geological wonderland where mixed forests of pine, fir, and cedar blanket ancient hillsides, while meadows provide breathing room between dense timber stands. This diverse ecosystem encompasses everything from waterfront beaches to ecological reserves, creating a living laboratory where hiking trails serve as corridors through multiple biomes, each supporting its own unique community of flora and fauna.

PO Box 115, Ahsahka, Idaho, 83520-0115, United States
Driving directionsComing from Moscow, Idaho: Take Hwy 8 East to Troy, Idaho (approx 11 miles). Just past town take a right on Hwy 99. Troy, Idaho to Kendrick, Idaho via Hwy 99 (take left at bottom of hill). Go through Kendrick until hitting a Y-section ~1/4 mile past town. Veer right. A sign will say Dworshak State Park: 24 miles to Freeman Creek, 28 miles to Three Meadows, ~35 miles to Dworshak Dam. After 1/8 mile, go right and cross bridge. Begin steep climb (Hwy P1). Stay on road towards Southwick - County Road P1 (also known as Cavendish Hwy), 9 miles (Southwick to Cavendish is 5 miles). At the Lewiston Grain Growers (2 grain silos), make a left onto Freeman Creek Road. There will be a Dworshak State Park sign stating the distance to Freeman Creek and to Three Meadows (~10 mi/13.5 mi). When you get within 2 miles of the park the road has steep switchbacks. It has about a 7-9% grade going down to the park. (The road at this point only will accommodate RV/Trailers in a single lane around some corners.)
Road access includes steep climbs and descents, tight switchbacks, and single-lane sections requiring priority for RVs and trailers. "DO NOT take the Google recommended route (fastest route) where you turn at Lenore Grade. It turns into a very narrow, gravel road, horrible for RV's. Instead, take the route to Juliaetta and Kendrick (Hwy 3). It is only about 10 minutes longer, paved the entire way, and easier on your rigs."Nearby places
