About this campground
Perched high on the sacred slopes of Haleakalā at nearly 7,000 feet, Hosmer Grove Campground offers an intimate wilderness experience unlike any other in Hawaii. This exclusive tent-only sanctuary features just six thoughtfully spaced campsites, each furnished with its own picnic table and grill, creating the perfect basecamp for your volcanic adventures. Here, where clouds drift through fragrant eucalyptus groves and native birds sing their morning songs, you'll discover a Hawaii far removed from the tropical beaches below—a place where the air is crisp, the stars shine brilliantly, and the ancient mountain shares its timeless stories.
The Hosmer Grove Campground is designed for tent camping and offers basic amenities, making it suitable for those seeking a traditional camping experience in a national park setting.
Weather and SeasonsAt this lofty elevation, Hosmer Grove exists in its own microclimate where tropical Hawaii meets alpine conditions. Daytime temperatures hover pleasantly between 50-65°F, perfect for hiking and exploration, while nights transform the campground into a chilly retreat where temperatures can plummet near freezing, particularly during winter months. The mountain's moods are ever-changing—morning mists may give way to brilliant sunshine, only to welcome afternoon showers that nourish the surrounding forest. Pack layers and rain gear for this adventure, as Haleakalā's weather can shift from balmy to brisk in moments.
ElevationRising nearly 7,000 feet above the Pacific, Hosmer Grove places you in Hawaii's alpine zone—a rare and remarkable ecosystem where the tropical island transforms into a high-altitude wonderland. At this elevation, you'll breathe air that's noticeably thinner and crisper than at sea level, and nighttime temperatures demand warm sleeping bags and cozy layers. The altitude creates a natural sanctuary above the clouds, where sunrise views are legendary and the star-filled nights reveal constellations impossible to see from the beaches below. Take time to acclimate, stay hydrated, and let your body adjust to this ethereal perch between earth and sky.
Natural Features and SceneryStep into an enchanted forest where towering eucalyptus trees create cathedral-like canopies overhead, their aromatic leaves rustling in the mountain breeze. The campground's crown jewel is its self-guided nature trail—a gentle loop that winds through groves alive with the songs of native honeycreepers and the distinctive calls of the Hawaiian petrel. From various vantage points, the landscape unfolds in dramatic fashion: gaze upward to Haleakalā's summit piercing the sky, or peer into the otherworldly volcanic crater below, its moonscape interior painted in shades of red, orange, and silver. Morning mists often shroud the forest in mystery, while afternoon light filters through the canopy, creating an ever-changing tableau of natural beauty.
Geological RegionHosmer Grove rests within the Summit District of Haleakalā National Park, a geological wonderland born from volcanic forces that shaped this massive shield volcano over hundreds of thousands of years. The campground occupies a unique transition zone where the mountain's volcanic slopes meet a surprising pocket of forest, creating an ecosystem found nowhere else on Earth. The famous figure-eight nature trail showcases this remarkable convergence, guiding visitors through groves where introduced eucalyptus trees shelter rare native plants and endemic bird species. This is a landscape of contrasts—where tropical island meets alpine environment, where ancient lava flows support delicate forest ecosystems, and where every sunrise reveals the dramatic volcanic architecture that defines this sacred Hawaiian summit.
